    Native Voicemail Notifications Fix Thread

If you use a "flashed" phone on Boost, you may have noticed you don't get a notification when someone leaves you a voicemail. I've made a few Phone.apk patches for some of the more popular HTC phones, and a ROM for the LG Optimus S/V. You'll need root, the Android SDK installed on your computer and it also helps to have an idea what you're doing, too.

This doesn't flash your phone to Boost, nor does it give you visual voicemail services. This also isn't the only way to get native voicemail notifications working - there are many custom ROMs with working voicemail. But not everyone wants a custom ROM, so that's why I've made these patches. You may (probably will) get force close errors if you use the wrong Phone.apk on the wrong version of Android or the wrong phone. You're welcome to experiment (hey, it's part of the fun!), but don't blame me if something goes wrong - I don't own an original Evo or Shift anymore and can't do any further testing on newer Android versions.

Basically, boot your phone into your custom recovery and mount /system. Pull a copy of your existing Phone.apk and Phone.odex files, then delete them both from your phone. Push the correct patched Phone.apk, reboot and enjoy working voicemail notifications.

These patched Phone.apks are deodexed, so there is no .odex file to worry about.

    4.24.651.1 Patched Phone.apk

    Evo 3D

    2.17.651.5 Patched Phone.apk

    Evo Shift

    TMartinPPC_ShiftyGingerSense_v1.0 Patched Phone.apk

    LG Optimus S

Latest stock Froyo, not the newest thing out there, but completely optimized for Boost. No Sprint ID, visual voicemail removed and native voicemail notifications patched. Must be flashed as a Nandroid restore.

Thank you sir for this, I just hope you are here when ICS comes out for the 3d.

I also wanted to ask you, I have been using the older 3.70 apk on my 3d, and it works, I just wanted to ask is the new apk different? Also, would using the wrong one cause any issues such as not receiving calls periodically? just curious.

    Thanks again.

I've seen quite a few people say they're successfully using an older Phone.apk with a newer Android version, over on XDA. It's kinda an at-your-own-risk thing, as who knows if there's any hidden bugs or broken dependencies.

I plan to keep my Evo 3D for awhile (I use it as a 3D camera/media player, lol) and a family member just bought a refurb from Cowboom, so I'll likely work on the fix (if it's still needed) for official ICS, when it hits.

Thanks, yeah, Iv'e been making the original 3.70 apk stretch through the updates.lol I'm using the 3.70 apk on the newest 2.17, but I think it may be starting to give out.

Iv'e been experiencing people calling, and they say it goes right to voicemail. I even tested it, and I had full signal, and the phone was awake, but when I called my number, it went to voicemail. It only does this periodically, but it is annoying. Everithing is up to date, so I was thinking maybe it had something to do with the apk.

I will test your new 2.17 version out, and hopefully that helps.

    Thanks again, for providing these.

Any idea if it might work on the original Epic as well?

If the Epic Touch fix ends up not being too difficult, I'll see about setting up a donations page to raise the $80 to buy one on Cowboom. I don't really make any money off of this (and I've also seen other people take credit for posting my patched APKs), so that's kinda where it stands.

Also, I've had people ask me how I patch the Phone.apk. It requires experience reverse engineering Android apps, no other way around it. I was a programmer in a past life, lol.

You could also use Root Explorer and just put the phone.apk file in the system/app, do a battery pull, get back in the file and fix permissions on the phone.apk file, reboot and you're done.

Rather than you buying another phone I would be happy to test the modified APKs out if/when you get around to it.

If you need anything pulled off let me know. I'm running a semi-custom ROM (CleanGB), it's based off of stock EL30 but with a lot of the bloat removed.

It takes a lot of trial and error to rebuild the missing notification code. Without being able to plug the phone in and read the logcat output, I'd have no idea what I'm doing. At any rate, I've started testing the fix for the Epic Touch, the password will be removed once I'm satisfied it's reliable enough to release.

As a side note, I'm still extremely disappointed at Samsung's lack of quality control. I had to exchange my Epic Touch twice before I got one that had didn't have a defective main camera.

Well, I've been running the patched Phone.apk for the Epic Touch for awhile and it doesn't seem to be doing anything abnormal, so I've removed the password.

Here's how to get root for your Epic Touch:
    EL29 Root ODIN Restore

Besides the original Phone.apk/odex, you'll also want to delete the vtt-sprint.apk/odex files because the Visual Voicemail app interferes with the notifications.

THANK YOU! gotanmp3 it works like a charm. But, any chance you'll make a patch for the ICS build of the Epic Touch?

I think he's working on it, but he might be waiting for an official release, they do have an release candidate but it might change and that patched phone apk might not work.. But we all are standing by to test!

Provided the manufacturers didn't break anything too badly in ICS, I'll work on the Evo 3D and Epic Touch Phone.apks when the official OTA rolls out. I know that's not what people running leaks/pre-releases wanted to hear, but there's only so many hours in the day and this isn't my day job, lol.

I must say that I have searched high and low for the correct EVO 3D voicemail patch for the new RUU 2.17 update. I tried the 1.13 but it really hosed my phone up. I am going to push the 2.17 phone.apk patch and hope it is all good. I will keep you updated.
