I mainly use this device as a media player to play my mkv movies on my hi def tv, or read ebooks, surf the web.
Also old school video game emulators
I don't get the feeling that it is a huge phone.
I find the touch screen quite comparable to the ipad 2 and hell for < $150 come on (I got mine for $119)
I think this meets the OP's needs as an entry level tablet
