Release on May 31 at $299 With ICS and Sense 3.6. You will lose your grandfathered plan with this phone but even without 4G coverage in your area this phone rocks. Like I posted elsewhere instead of it being a Sprint hand me down we have the newest OS and Sense Ui upgraded for Virgin.
    VM Journey= LG Rumor2>Samsung Intercept UD6>Motorola Triumph CM7 TG-Reloaded>HTC Evo V?

I'm leaning towards getting the phone based on specs alone.

The problem is, WiMax will likely end up being a huge disappointment. Coverage is spotty and tempermental. Some markets (like where I live) do not have adequate coverage throughout the entire region. Spending an extra $10/month just to have a faster processor and a newer-looking interface running on an awful 3G network is a tough call.

Like others have said, VM could be bombarded with returns from angry customers who weren't fully aware of the limitations posed by Sprint's existing "4G' network. The Triumph was certainly an upgrade in specs from the Optimus V, but under-delivered in other areas...namely GPS and touch screen response. Even worse, these dissatisfied customers will forever lose their $25/month plan by gambling on a soon-to-be-antiquated WiMax network. At least disgruntled Triumph owners didn't lose their legacy BT plans in the process.

The Evo V 4G is already being hyped as a 4G savior for VM, but I'm not sure the initial reviews are going live up to the hype...just like the Triumph didn't live up to its hype.

Sprint's 3G EVDO Rev. A network works great, and this New Premium Android device will provide performance results that entry level and mid grade devices are not capable of producing.

Access to Sprint's 4G WiMax Network is just a bonus...

Operating without a contract makes you far more valuable.

it's definitely gonna be a problem if VM label evo V as a 4g phone out of the box, since i believe that majority of VM phone buyers will buy it from retailers believing it to be 4g, where salesmen aren't familiar with limitations of wimax. if they don't advertise it as 4g on the box, they might get away with it.

WiMax was Sprint's first attempt at 4G, and it sounds like it bombed with post-paid subscribers. Sprint is now selling the scraps from that failed venture as pre-paid 4G. I think the consequences are going to be unfortunate. Those people expecting 4G in an area where WiMax isn't present will instead be directed to Sprint's sluggish 3G network. Meanwhile, those who do get a Sprint WiMax signal will find that maintaining it in a large building or moving vehicle is difficult.

Obviously, none of us on HF will be blindsided by those realities...but you have to wonder how many technophobe parents with teenage children who want a 4G phone will be keen to this stuff. I can't wait to see the return lines at Best Buy in early June.

In some select places, yes. There are quite a few folks who have left VM because they were tired of unreliable data service. That is irrefutable.

If VM offers a paragraph's worth of disclaimers on the front of the box, then maybe they'll avoid disappointing some customers. Most people will see "4G" and tune everything else out. Those are the customers that VM needs to worry about later this month.

They'll be the ones waiting on hold while a Virgin Mobile customer service representative gets screamed at by the 82 other Evo 4G subscribers who were having the same issues before them.
