A friend of mine had his phone stolen and the only phone I had that he could use is a old Motorola KRZR K1 that came from Fido. It is unlocked but when he pits his SIM card in it it shows another carrier. I was thinking it might be a simple as a setting that needs to be changed or as complex as a flashing a new firmware. I live in Florida US and he is in Quebec so I would have to relay any instructions to him. I am not sure what other info might be needed so if I forgot something just let me know and I will post it asap.
I know the phone works as I have personally used it on AT&T and T-Mobile.
videotron sim cards cannot work from carriers that aren't using the AWS bands (the ones videotron uses). they're pretty different from regular gsm bands, and that's why that aside maybe from blackberrys you can't really use unlocked phones from most other canadian carriers on videotron's network.

BBs are not the exception in this case - at present RIM has not released any variant of any device that included both the AWS band and 850/1900 3G.
Any 3G/4G phone from T-Mobile USA will work, or any phone from WIND Mobile or Mobilicity. Certain specific phones from the other CDN carriers will work - Galaxy Nexus, Telus Galaxy S2X, Bell Samsung Galaxy W, a few of the Nokias. If he's not going anywhere outside of Quebec anytime soon.
