Umm Verizon is not allowed to throttle LTE per the FCC. It was part of their agreement when they bought the 700mhz block at auction. Why do you think they currently throttle 3g but not LTE? That is why. Also, why would you say that you wish they would take away grandfathered plans? That's stupid and sounds like jealousy.

Right now I use my WiFi connection at home for most of the stuff I do on my Droid X, and for the last 3 months I've only used about 800MB of my plan.

I really have no need for a smartphone any more and since all I do is talk rarely and send about 200 texts/month, it seems silly to pay so much.

But what if in the future data usage becomes more common and I want to get a data plan again? I won't be able to get the unlimited plan back. What do you guys think? Is it worth keeping?
Page Plus a Verizon reseller offers unlimited talk and text and 1gig of 3g data for $55 a month with no tax if you refill on their website. You could take your DROIDX their and cut your bill in half. Verizon is so expensive i dont see why anyone would want to pay that much for service.

I considered Page Plus, but as said I didn't want to switch and then lose my unlimited plan if I ever wanted it again.

My real underlying question is whether I would want to have it back at some point in the future.

But given this news that grandfathered customers will eventually have to give up their unlimited plans, I'm thinking I will just sell the plan now as it seems very likely that I will lose it anyway at some point.

hes talking about 2 entirely different things. each contract you sign is its own free standing entity. it doesnt reflect or effect the contract before or the contract after. they are not required to carry over any part of your old contract to your new one. just as you are not required to sign the new contract. by a measure of,we will call it good faith, companies have grandfathered in plans and features and let them carry over to new contracts. they dont have to do that. they still are letting you keep you unlimited and carry it over to a new contract its just on there terms not yours. thats within there right. what he said and he is absolutely correct is 2gb of data is 2 gb. no matter where he puts it what he does with it or how he uses it he is using just 2gb of data. the mobile hotspot charge is a joke.

Verizon unlimited plans WILL be gone by the end of the year. Even if you were grandfathered.

I actually wouldn't be shocked if the grandfathered upgrades were pulled completely at some point.

Fiber backhaul for Verizon in Southern Illinois in 2013 - about time.

I'm under the assumption that eventually the grandfathered people will lose their unlimited plans at some point down the line.

People are going to upgrade eventually to either 4G or a new phone.

I think it makes a lot of sense to sell my plan now. What do you guys think?

I've read Shammo's rhetoric, the blogs/articles/posts, and the subsequent whining (and I resemble that remark!), but our GFed UL plans are likely not going to be taken from us anytime soon. To you, I'm just "some guy". To me, I like the predictability of one price each month - and I'm not happy that some glorified accountant (CFO Shammo) has sought to leverage a company asset to optimize profits for his company. I've only got 3 lines on my personal account and 20+ lines through my small company on VZW's network, but I've been assured that my GFed data plans aren't going to be taken away from me or my company. Abide by their terms, and you'll keep your data plan intact. I have an old GF Cingular family plan with GF smartphone data - I've abided by the terms of their plan, despite 3 upgrades, and I'm still on a 450 minute family plan that I've had since 2005. With VZW, I'll be upgrading the devices on my GFed lines or not using the subsidies once the drop-dead date has passed - I've been verbally assured that I won't lose my UL data and I've had my accounts noted to that effect, so it's in writing now.

I've performed my own cost/benefit analysis, I'll be using my upgrades when or soon after the word drops from VZW and choosing my devices so that they fit within my workflow, and consider outright purchases in the future if that's what's important to me. Keep in mind that all of the carriers didn't even offer UL voice minutes until a couple of years ago to us lowly consumers - but they do now. And, VZW has offered that they might offer UL data in the future again for select promotions (no, I don't have a link handy right now...).

In essence, I'm no longer worried, and I'm not selling off my GFed data plans. YMMV.

Exactly. Whether they outright cancel them (which I doubt would happen) or they force people out through other means, their aim is to get rid of GF'ed customers and it seems like they eventually will.

Verizon may not be able to change the terms of a contract, but they can make it difficult to upgrade or make other changes and keep the same terms.

I don't think Verizon has ever made changes as you described, I know people with 10 year old plans, just pay retail, if you want to keep your plan as is and the plan is no longer offered. You have to do a cost/benefit to see if the plan is worth the extra expense, to me simple answer is yes. My unlimited 4G with unlimited hotspot is worth it.

Well if you are fine paying $649 for a phone just to keep the unlimited plan, well good for you. The rest of us don't want to do that. I understand the math...if you use a lot of data...it can save money. I don't use a lot of data, and am not paying $649 for a phone. Verizon clearly doesn't want me as a customer, even though I only use 1.8-2.4GB a month. I think it is perfectly valid to complain.

A lot of people here in the last year:

    1) Lost NE2 discounts
    2) Will have to pay $30 to upgrade now
    3) Will lose corporate data discounts
    4) Will be forced onto tiered

I think some complaining to Verizon is perfectly valid.

You are 100% correct. Just leave VZW since you aren't been treating properly. After all they need to earn your business since its your hard earned money. Why give someone your money if you don't like the terms. I know I wouldn't.
