When you say "disabled," do you mean:
1. There is a setting you are not allowed to change?
2. You never see the roaming indicator turn on?
3. You can't get service in an area that you used to, with the roaming indicator turned on?

I've been on straight talk about half a month and realized since I switched from AT&T to straight talk my roaming was disabled on my iPhone I know I had it enabled before I switched. If anyone is curious its in settings general network under cellular data.

I was still able to roam but without data I would either have edge or no data at all where I would have had 3G on AT&T postpaid however after turning it back on I have access to 3G when I roam. It had the same affect on AT&T if I turned it off however I always left it on and it switched back to off after I switched to straight talk.
There is no roaming on Straight Talk. In my experience, data works on Edge, but is so slow that it's completely worthless (2000ms+ pings, 20kbs/sec with full bars)
Samsung Galaxy Nexus: 4.2.2 rooted with ST AT&T SIM & full Google Voice integration
Using Straight Talk on a jailbroken (not unlocked) At&T compatible iPhone 4S.
Having that setting on or off (General > Network > Data Roaming) doesn't seem to make any difference.
The problem I've been having with Straight Talk is that often talk and text work fine, but data doesn't - webpages won't load, cannot receive emails, etc. And then when I move or drive just a short distance suddenly data starts working again.
When I phoned Straight Talk, they told me that unless I am in my activation zip code - which is not a very large area - I am ALWAYS roaming which is why sometimes the phone will not lock into data. ST suggested turning the phone off and back on when this happens.
Over all, this is an annoying factor with Straight Talk - that the data doesn't "kick in" always depending on where I am, and for this reason I am considering switching back to Simple Mobile. When I was with them about two years ago I didn't even have all these issues.
Carlos also owns Simple Mobile or about to own it.
I'm not certain that owning affects their technology. Simple Mobile is on a completely different network (T-Mobile) from Straight Talk (AT&T).
In any case, Simple Mobile 2 1/2 YEARS ago, worked better in important respects than Straight Talk TODAY. I can't imagine that the Simple Mobile of today could be anything but better.
But one thing I just realized - the frequencies on Simple Mobile, since it is T-Mobile, are not compatible with 4G speed on an AT&T enabled iPhone, so until T Mobile expands their frequencies any iPhone on Simple Mobile will get at best EDGE speeds.
Interesting jpapa1086 Can you please explain further?
Straight Talk's network is AT&T so isn't it the network that creates the roaming if outside of our ST zip code activation area? not the type of phone?
One thing I really don't understand is
http://www.straighttalk.com/coverage
and why the coverage for Androids is different from for other phones.
When you receive a sim card from ST, the sim card will register on a network, first being the network the sim card is provisioned for, then if that network cannot be found, the it will look for another network to register on, if and only ST has roaming agreements with the other networks. For example, st has roaming agreements with att and tmobile. If you have a st/att sim and are in a location where there is no att coverage, it will register on tmobile since ST has roaming agreements with them. ST is not only att, it is tmobile as well. When you order a sim from thier website, you can choose if you want att or tmobile.
ST also works on sprint and verizon. But the only way to access those networks is if you by a ST branded phone that supports them. ST doesnt have roaming agreements between the both so if you buy a samsung proclaim, it will only work on verizons native coverage. Most other st branded cdma phones are sprint, and will only work on the sprint native network. Currently ST does not allow you to bring your own device to the verizon or sprint network.
What you are seeing on the ST coverage map is the Sprint native network. By andriod they mean the androids they sell. You can also see that some phones also have a map in red, that is the verizon network map. To get a accurate coverage map for the gsm andoids you bring to ST and put one of their ST sim cards in, you will need to look on att or tmobile website
Thanks.
Well, when it comes to getting 4G for my iPhone the only current option other than expensive AT&T itself (or, I suppose, expensive Verizon) I could think of is Straight Talk.
I found this coverage map for ST:
