Question Costs of terminating iPhone voice + data contract

I am not on a contract with Fido, and currently have the 10$/month, 30cents/minute retention plan with 30$/6GB iPhone data add-on. In addition, I have 220 fido dollars.

In spite of many years with Fido (customer since 1999. Nokia 5190 FTW!), I got to a point where I think it's time for us to part our ways.

    Thus two questions:
Can I buy either an iPhone 4s or Galaxy Nexus partially with my Fido dollars, then pay off the rest of the balance, and terminate the contract?

With Galaxy it should be straight forward, right? 600$ cost of galaxy + 25$ HUP fee - 220 fido dollars = pay 405$ and taxes, and done, right? No contract should be involved, Galaxy is unlocked, is that correct?

What about iPhone 4s? Is there a Fido price for an iPhone without a contract, at least internal to Fido? I figure it is same as Apple, 850$ for he 64 Gb model, is that correct?

Can I buy it unsubsidized from Fido for that money (and thus unlocked in Apple database), without going on a contract? Or can I buy it subsidized for 370$, pay it off using Fido dollars (370 + 25$ HUP fee - 220 Fido dollaris = 175$ + taxes), and then terminate the basic voice/data contract and residual hardware fee (and get it marked as unlocked in Apple's database)? About how much would this cost (ie, if in total more then 850$ that it costs from Apple directly, I'll not bother)?

    Thank you very much.

If your buying a smartphone with only fido $ then you are required to take a 3 year data plan. If you already have a data plan then it's the full price + tax - fido $. The left over balance will show up on your bill. As far as I know you can't cancel your account in the same cycle as the upgrade. So you may need to wait before cancelling.

    Thank you.

I stopped by a local Fido store the other day, and told them that I would like to buy an iPhone outright. They looked at my account, and quoted me 450$ + 220 Fido dollars I have + taxes for the 16 GB model, and 670$ + 220 fido dollars + taxes for the 64 gb model.

Basically, this come out to whatever the price Apple charges + 25$ HUP fee, give or take 5 dollars.

The other catch, is that the phone will be locked to Fido, and I will need to pay another 50$ to get it unlocked, so real costs for me would be 500$+ tax+220 FD for 16 GB model, and 730$ +tax+220 FD for the 64GB model.

So, if you are looking for the unlocked iPhone, the way I understand it, if you have more then 85 Fido dollars (50$ unlock fee + 25$ HUP fee + taxes on both), it is cheaper to buy an iPhone through Fido, and jump through the hoops to get it unlocked. Otherwise, it is more cost effective to buy it from Apple directly.

With Fido, you end up saving however many Fido dollars you have - 85$, but it takes time and phone calls to get this done, and your time might not be free....

I am sure that you can not use your fido dollars towards the $25 HUP fee and the $50 Unlock fee.

Fido $ can only be used towards phone purchase.

The store didn't mention about a 3 year contract? That's strange.

If your buying an iPhone outright there's no term required. As for the unlocking part it's quite easy to do. You get the iPhone contact customer service which will then transfer you to customer relations, who will then verify you met all the requirements for the unlocking. If you do then you are transferred to the unlocking department which will put your iPhone on the apple "white" list. Your iPhone is then unlocked. Shouldn't take more then 15 min.

And no you can't uses your fido $ to pay for the unlocking and admin fee.
