I noticed the personal hotspot option on my iPhone 3GS recently upgraded to ios5.1 is now missing. Besides upgrading to 5.1, the only change was the official ATT unlock and changing to a ST SIM.
I don't want to use personal hotspot on Straight Talk (the data is too slow anyway), but when I take the phone abroad and use a local SIM and add a data package, I want this option.
Is the feature hidden because of the ST SIM, or is something wrong with my phone? I tried to recommended trick to reset network settings, but the option is still not visible.
Jailbreak the phone and you can get this
Verizon 4G LTE

AT&T 4G LTE
how do i get this?
I would use pdanet you can hide the fact that your tethering and for me it's been more reliable though I only used it on AT&T never on straight talk.
The carrier profile that AT&T loads with one of their SIMs kills personal hotspot and the ability to set APN data. You should be fine once you move to another carrier SIM.
Sorry to resssurect this thread -
It was mentioned that an AT&T SIM kills hotspot - What about a Straight Talk sim? Does that too kill the hotspot option?
If so, does the Tmobile $30 5gb / 100 min plan also kill the hotspot option?
Thanks! This is the first time I have every looked into using a smart phone on a GSM carrier.
And for what its worth - I just bought an iPhone 3GS with iOS 5.1.1 - It is carrier unlocked
(if any of that pertains to my questions in the prior post)
Any AT&T or AT&T MVNO SIM where the personal hotspot isn't purchased hides the option in the iphone. Even on stock android it checks with the carrier first before enabling that option.
No idea on tmobile.
You should be able to jailbreak pretty easily to show hotspot on 5.1.1. If you update to 6, you'll have to wait for jailbrealk to be available. As for the android comment above, that has not been my experience with my nexus - it's not blocked at all. This may be because it's stock android, or may be because of jelly bean. Dn't know, just know that it isn't blocked. And for those that are, foxfi works on mos phones without rooting.
Using Straight Talk when I had my nexus on 4.1 it was blocked, now the same on my note. It will show the option but if you try to enable it you get a checking screen and then "to enable mobile hotspot on this device go to att.com/my wireless or dial 611. It's a bit easier to get around this on android than on iphone but that's just another excuse for straight talk to detect it and cancel your service early, so I don't do it.
That's very interesting. I never had that screen on my Nexus. I just checked the box, and it started right up. I don't do heavy tethering, but I do occasionally tether my ipad - it's still a mobile browser, just on a larger screen, or to send the data playing scramble or drawsomething.
I'm pretty sure the Galaxy Nexus sold on the Google Play store doesn't check if you have tethering through your carrier.
On carrier branded Android phones, theres usually a system app (apk) that does the tethering permission checks and simply deleting that will remove the check. Some newer carrier branded phones have this actually baked into Android itself and its more difficult to disable short of flashing a custom ROM.
