Is data plan required for the Avail if using my old sim card?
I have a contract sim with no data plan right now and really want the Avail go phone. I tried searching google for answers but seems to be mixed. So do I have to have a data plan once I switch the sim?
Can someone confirm? I read on ATT website that data plan is required on all smartphones go plan, but I'm not sure if this applies only to customers who are using the go phone plan. Instead I want to use my own sim card from my current contract.
No GoPhone account requires a data package. One can have pay per use data for nonsmartphones. Since pay per use is activated by default for nonsmartphones, you will have to block data if you want no data at all. Data usage on a smartphone is blocked without a data package. MMS stiil works.
If you are using a smartphone on a postpaid account, a data plan is required regardless as to how you obtained the phone. "GoPhone" is a service and not a device. A telephone used on a GoPhone account is no different from one used on a postpaid account.

If you use the Avail as a GoPhone, no data package is required. Without the data package, data is disabled, since it is a smartphone. The Avail is not offered by AT&T for postpaid accounts. None of the ZTE models are sold for postpaid accounts. It has an Android operating system so it qualifies as a smartphone. If you use an AT&T smartphone on a postpaid account, a data plan is required regardless of the source of the phone. It could be a gift, found, stolen or purchased from any outlet.
