Using another IMEI to activate the SIM card proves nothing about the ability to activate using an iPhone IMEI.

I've used various iphones locked and unlocked, on different accounts, on the 10 cents a minute plan and currently the $25 a month plan, maybe other gophone plans too. Calling 611 from an iphone has never resulted with threats of banishment.
The only restriction seems to be not being able to use an iPhone IMEI to activate an account. Other than that it seems to work fine for everyone. I've talked to CS via 611 for various reasons and they have noticed that I use iPhones with my accounts (I don't need to mention it, they already know). Only once they tried to blame an issue I was having on that. But that's it. No threats or anything implied. Same at corporate stores. I hope this stays this way. It'd suck if they start bumping people for that even if we only use iPhones for voice/text only with the new PAYG policy.

Nor does your post or link shed any light on the subject

I agree, but switching to another brand of smart phone or moving to t-mobile would be easy enough for many of us.

Hmm, I'm thinking Samsung Google Nexus I just have to convince myself to part with another $425 after just buying the Lumia weeks ago. But I just held one today, and they are very nice.

Also compared to the "mostly" unlocked iPhone 4S at $649, the truely unlocked Google Nexus at $399 seems like a no brainer, especially for those with gmail etc. that don't rely to heavily on iTunes.

    And of course, Google Voice.

Ya, as another poster said, I would like to know for a fact that AT&T booted someone off the network for using data on an international unlocked iPhone on the network. I used my iPhone last year in NYC activated by an eBay seller on prepaid. I felt that something was not quite right with the service, for example, slow data speeds and loss of connectivity...but moreover, it worked.

I realize the paygo data plans are no more (in lieu of having to pay for monthlies) but, can anyone confirm they will actually bar you for using an iPhone? The alternative, like last time, is just to have the dealer enter 0's for the IMEI I guess.

Unfortunately all the MVNOs are no-go's for me, because only AT&T offers UNLIMITED Canadian text on its $50 plan.

After hanging around hofo, my own experiences, reading Jairzinho's post above and having just searched the forum, it's clear to me that those who claim ATT will boot iPhone users from prepaid are plain wrong. I was wrong once myself too but I don't think we are going to hear from anybody who got kicked off of Gophone for using an iPhone unless it was a long time ago in a place far away.

Calling 611 from an iphone has never resulted with threats of banishment. *Some* sims that are actually branded as "gophone" might be locked to the phone they were activated in for six months. This can be avoided by using a standard ATT sim, regular size or microsim. These are easily found on ebay for a buck or three. If a Gophone branded sim gives you trouble just lose it and get a free replacement at an att store. I've always gotten a regular sim as a replacement and never been charged, turned down, or had to visit more than one store to do this.

Go ahead and use your iphone 4s on any of the gophone plans except the $50 unlimited and be aware you can't buy data on the 10 cent a minute plan. Whether mms works without data I don't know, my guess is no.
Yeah I wont be needing data with it.

I can answer this question for everyone. It has been made a truth AT&T doesn't allow data usage unless you get a apn changer for any iphone (3g and higher). On to the iphone 4 with a jailbreak and ultrasn0w,ultrasnow fixer, and samprefs you use it as a gophone. alot of work for it to work properly as a go phone but it will work . In my three years as an iphone user and almost four year of being a go phone customer I have never been booted off for using data on an iphone .AT&T reps always say data will not work if you use that phone.

Correct. Just like reps tell you that you can't use data on any "4G" (non-LTE) smartphone, even though it's perfectly possible once you change the APN settings. I've been using a Captivate Glide for a couple of months with the old 500 MB data plan and this month I added 200 MB and 3G data has worked flawless on my faux-G phone.

Apple just makes it harder to modify APN settings, but it's doable and with that you can use any iPhone on GoPhone.

No one claimed that AT&T will cancel your account if they discover you have an iPhone on a GoPhone account. The carrier's policy is that they will not activate a GoPhone SIM card using an iPhone's IMEI. Any corporate store which circumvents this is not following the carrier's rules.

I used the "all 0's" trick for my IMEI and it worked flawlessly. I needed to add data packs to get data (as well as APN change) but there was never an issue.

Yep, people all over have used iPhones on prepay as long as they both have existed. Just go to the activation page, enter zeros and you are good to go.

I think the AT&T reps in the stores had been trained to tell customers it was not possible to have an iPhone on prepaid, and obviously they won't help people do it, which was sad being that they will help customers with Android devices all day long do the same thing.
