    Unsolicited downloads (Virus)?

I listed an item on Craigslist several days ago and put my VM cell phone number as a contact. In the past I had problems doing that so I spelled the numbers instead of using the digits. This morning I noticed a missed call from the Cayman Islands and also that I had a download complete. Yes, I did everything wrong. I had allowed 3rd party software to run on the phone and I even clicked on the download which had a .png ext.
Now I fear I have allowed the perpitrator access to god knows what on my phone, which is btw is an LG Optima V. What I need to know is what are my options. Can I wipe the phone clean and reload everything and it will be ok, or do I need to buy a new phone? Also, do I need to get a new number as well, since that number has been compromised?

I fully admit what I did was stupid, but are there any gurus out the that can guide me through this mess? Thanks in advance for your help in this matter.

This never happened to me, but this is what I would do personally if there was any suspicion that my phone was compromised:
    Download this:
    SMS Backup & Restore
    Call Logs Backup & Restore
    sync contacts to gmail
go to gmail on computer and change password
back up messages and call log to sd card, name the files so they can be found easily
    pull sd card out
    factory reset phone
start computer in safe mode and put the card into the card reader
copy messages and call log back up files to desktop and write down there location on sd card
copy any pictures and music to desktop i wished to save, not including anything i don't recognize
format the card in computer to FAT32
put the card in the phone, format again
set up phone (remember to use new gmail password)
    sync contacts from google
    Download this:
    SMS Backup & Restore
    Call Logs Backup & Restore
place the backup files from computer desktop onto sd card in the location they belong
    restore messages and call log
change passwords to all accounts that are being accessed the phone
copy the pics and music from computer desktop to where they belong
    continue phone setup normally

This is probably overkill, hopefully someone with more insight will add their opinion

Runaddons detector, or scan for viruses. both. Do you really have any indication something was installed to your phone, and in that case what? Missed calls don't make downloads which don't install software on their own accord which can't hide themselves. I see a case of digital hypochondria here.

First, you did not field the call. Second, you did not install anything. Third, even if you did, you have not experienced any symptoms of a normal virus attack.

Allowing unknown sources does not mean anything can install itself automatically or silently, it simply means you don't have to be in the Android Marketplace to do those installs. You would still be prompted for an action.

accidentally downloading a picture would explain why there is a download indicator on your phone's notification bar, and often clicking on these fails to open the downloaded file, simply because the stock downloads app kinda sucks.

    Is your phone rooted?

If so be careful doing a reset from the privacy menu especially if you have a newer Optimus with the Hitachi screen.

    Wirelessly posted (HTC Wildfire S: Opera/9.80 (J2ME/MIDP; Opera Mini/6.5.26955/27.1597; U; en) Presto/2.8.119 Version/11.10)

if all else fails, call vm and request a warranty replacement.
Might want to update sensitive passwords from your computer if you think it is neccessary.

Operating without a contract makes you far more valuable.

You people are going to need to read OP very carefully. Specifically the things that aren't there. OP never installed anything, and I strongly doubt OP's rooted, so silent installations are next to impossible.

Sounds like something auto updated itself. You can't install something on a phone by calling it.

I use my VM number for Craigslist too and get spam messages and calls all the time. I wouldn't worry about it.
