Been using a couple of in device speed test apps for a few months that actually seem to work!
For OS7 phones Fancy Speed test is pretty good. One nice aspect of the app is that it allows you to choose your transporter between cellular, WiFi or BIS/BES. Speed results seem to be fairly accurate, about what I was expecting.
For the PlayBook Xtreme Labs makes an app simply called Speedtest. It automatically picks up your transporter and the test runs visually giving you both average and maximum rates.
I have used other apps on my phones but none I could recommend for one reason or another. Both of these apps run smoothly and appear at least fairly accurate. If you're looking for decent speed apps these are two I can finally recommend.
Both can be found in their respective App Worlds.

Thanks for the heads up. I will look into it. It would be nice to compare the different mobile networks, because me and my friends all have Blackberry's through various providers. This would be interesting to see the results from different carriers in different locations or signal strengths.
