I was not disagreeing with Rockjock, I was pointing out that the areas his friend was saying are dead zones are not! And i know cause i checked them personally.

No no my friend had you read what I wrote you would understand what was said. I shall dummy it down for you. I said I chose Chatr over Wind because of the places my dad frequents. Be it in a store or sitting playing chess with his mates I wanted him connected. I like the idea of being able to reach him anytime and anyplace. Now if I can get him to remember to charge the phone regularly I will be aces!

For calling only, I would say look at Public Mobile.

Dead zones can be an issue for the elderly. This is an area Wind and Mobilicity need to improve.

But doesn't Wind just use Rogers' network when you can't get a Wind signal? Or does that only work when you're outside of what is considered a home zone on their coverage map? eg if I'm in Toronto but I can't get a Wind signal, it should say Wind Away, not no signal at all?

Public only has networks in Toronto and Montreal. OP is looking for service in Alberta.

Thanks a ton everybody, I did go in with Chatr for my dad. There are no reception issues and he gets unlimited province wide.
I have been a wind customer since they came to Edmonton and a supporter long before they were launched. I wish they had a plan that suited my needs. Charging $8 for VM is highway robbery and is a made up charge like the Big three.
It does not affect me as I have $35 all in plan and have been generally happy with coverage and don't mind paying for roaming as it costs me more to dispute the charges than just pay it.

Well, I'm on wind with the $15 per month Friends and Family plan. I get no signal on my area using a Tmobile G2 phone. My wife has a blackberry on the same plan and sometimes she gets a signal if her phone is by the window. I have been with them for a long time and there is just no improvement in my area. Located in the Port Union/Lawrence area of Scarborough. Yes they have improved their signal in other area and expanded coverage, but for me their is nothing. Now considering switching to chartr for reliability and being able to receive and send text from home. Wind is great if you live in the city but as you get to the suburbs, they need to improve.

Wind and chatr are about the same to me but I would support WIND, the underdog. Your dad support will help WIND expand their network coverage and therefore better your service.

My brother is moving to Montreal for work in September. So we decided we'll suspend his Wind HMP line for the time (there'll be a ~$300 remaining balance on tab+). We're not sure if he'll settle there permanently. Meanwhile I recommended he and his gf sign up to the Koodoo $50 Canada-wide talk plan with a phone they like. Only 50 txts and no data, but at least our fam and TO friends can still keep in touch. Looked at Public, they nickel and dime for CID+VM, and no coverage in Quebec City. Just gotta do the best with what you got...
