I have a curious question, I purchased an AT&T iPhone 4s 5.1 for international use. Unfortunately, I didn't know it was updated to 5.1 at the time, since I was planning on jailbreaking and unlock via SAM anyways. The phone was purchased under contract when it was new, but the previous owner had paid the termination fee already and cancelled his service. I was wondering if there was anyway to unlock the device through AT&T, my co-worker who sold me the phone is on vacation and I won't be meeting up with him for another couple of days and I would like to get the device unlocked through AT&T without him here so I have something to use while I'm out of the country. I have his old phone number, email, etc.
I know AT&T will unlock given certain prerequisites, but more curious under these circumstance. I believe the line was cancelled a month ago.

Yeah, I got it unlocked. They asked me for the previous phone number, name on account, email on account, and the date it was paid for. Took several reps, some were stingier than others in terms of requiring the original owner to call. Told them the story I had listed above, it was just a pain to get him to do it because I was hoping to get the phone unlocked and meet up with him in Asia so I had a phone to use when I arrived. Almost defeats the purpose if I went with a locked one
They sent him the unlock email, I plugged it into iTunes for a restore and plugged in my international sim and picked up signal roaming on ATT but setting showed the international carrier.
