Global SIM for Dinc2 on PagePlus?

This is going to be long and for that I apologize, but I'm new to smartphones and page plus and have several questions. I've searched the PPC forum and can't find these particular answers.

I'm trying to decide between two phones, one being much less expensive than the other. I ordered a DInc from Ebay and a DInc2 from Blinq.com, with the DInc being $120 cheaper. The DInc already arrived and I successfully activated it on PPC yesterday. I bought the 1200 plan but have yet to apply the plan to the phone because I'm unsure whether I'll be keeping it. The DInc2 has yet to arrive.

I originally wanted the DInc2 due to the global SIM capabilities. I'm getting a new job that will involve some international travel and I assume this feature will be useful to me. I'm confused as to whether I will actually be able to use this feature on the DInc2 with PPC though. If I won't be able to use it then it makes more sense for me to keep the cheaper DInc and return the DInc2.

So, if I receive a locked DInc2 and I activate it on PPC, how do I get the unlock code for the SIM? I've read that, if I were with Verizon, I'd have to call and have them issue an unlock code for the SIM in order to be able to buy a new SIM in whatever country I am in and have it work properly. If I'm not with Verizon but with PPC, do I still need to unlock this SIM, and if so, can PPC do that? I assume this is the best route to follow? PPC doesn't issue global SIMS, do they? It's cheaper to get a SIM in the country you are in, is my understanding, is that true?

And as a follow up question, if I can make the DInc2 global work with PPC, I assume I can just port the number I bought for the DInc with PPC to the DInc2 just as I would with any other phone?

Thank you in advance for anyone with the answers!

    1. A Verizon phone has the Verizon number programmed over-the-air(the *22890 you punched in the phone activated the phone and programmed it). For PagePlus the Verizon side would work in the US on Verizon and roam domestically at higher rates, and possibly roam internationally in Canada, Mexico and Bermuda in CDMA mode. I say possibly because people I've known that have roamed internationally using PagePlus have had mixed results. But if these three international destinations are where you primarily travel than you can get probably get away without a global roaming phone.

    2. A Verizon phone that also has a sim slot for GSM global roaming uses a separate sim chip that is in addition to the CDMA programming mentioned above. Generally the phone comes with a Verizon/Vodaphone sim chip that has fairly high international roaming rates. To use a different sim chip you need to unlock the phone. You could try Verizon Global Service or PP customer service, but I can't guarantee favorable results (but they might provide the handset subsidy unlock code for free). An easier solution is to have it unlocked for a small fee by going online to a HoFo or ebay dealer that does unlocking or to a local independent cellphone store that has unlocking services. It's a fairly simple and inexpensive procedure to unlock most handsets.

    3. Once the handset is unlocked, you can insert any GSM sim chip. You may need to change a menu setting to select the GSM chip rather than the Verizon/PagePlus CDMA default.

    4. What international sim chips to use:

A local sim chip is cheaper. Can be bought in advance of travel from some dealers on ebay and elsewhere or at your destination at the airport or a cellphone shop. Use and toss. Or refill online if you need to keep the sim chip for future trips. I have a Bermuda Digicel sim chip purchased inexpensively on ebay I keep filled up for trips to Bermuda and sister Digicel countries in the non-US Caribbean. I add BM$10 every 60 days, and I have enough balance when needed for my next trip.

A callback sim chip (ekit Simple Calling service, Telna, Blu, Telestial Passport, etc.) is more complicated. They usually have a domestic dialing side for US and Canada travel, and an international call-back number side for elsewhere that you select as needed. Domestic is direct dial-out; international is dial out, the call disconnects, a message comes up on the screen, than the phone rings and it connects you to the party you have dialed after a voice message says what your minute balance is for your particular calling destination. I currently have an Ekit Simple Calling service sim card (cheapest bought over ebay) with a New York and a UK number on it...used it most recently for a multi-week trip to the Cayman Islands in Dec./Jan.). Rates are often inexpensive per minute but vary by destination; check your itinerary against various call-back sim cards to see which are priced best for what you need.

Also note some US carrier prepaid sim chips have limited international roaming capabilities. AT&T GoPhone has very competitive prepaid roaming rates in Mexico and Canada (think 25 and 39 cents respectively per minute). T-Mobile Prepaid can roam in Canada, Mexico and in some other foreign countries...but please note their foreign prepaid roaming rates outside North America are rather expensive.

Ken, thank you so much for the thorough explanation. I've learned so much! I will probably go the route of paying for the unlock code from somewhere and then buying whatever SIM chips I need for my destination. Again, many thanks!!

Is there a list of recommended Ebay sellers here anywhere, or would you be willing to give a reference? Thanks!!

I've had 8 successful unlocks from a guy going by swiftunlock, charged me $5-8 per time.

Highly reccommended on XDA, but the only reason i chose him in the first place was because he accepts google checkout as an alternative to paypal.

I usually just email him model/IMEI, he sends me a google invoice, i pay, and i get a code.

You can google swiftunlock to find the webpage.

If this is about CARRIER POLICY, then you should probably be aware that carriers change their policy unexpectedly, and inexplicably. Even if the answer is correct when posted, it could very well be wrong in a day, or week.

I recently unlocked my Dinc2 and had the intention of buying a local SIM when I went to Mexico a couple of weeks ago and never did get around to getting the local SIM. I do however, have a ST Nokia SIM in it and am able to use ATT network using that ST SIM if I need to but am only able to get 2G data speeds. Most of the time I just keep it on CDMA and use PPC. Still like having the ability to use either network. I think all phones should have this feature. LOL

I understand the sentiment. I've got a dual sim Blu Rave phone running an H2O/AT&T sim in 3G mode and an ekit simple calling sim card in GSM mode in the second slot that usually roams on T-Mobile in the US (but will work on just about any GSM carrier worldwide). Nice if I can't pick up a clear AT&T signal or am traveling outside the US...I just dial with the ekit sim. Also can VOIP dial with Skype if I pick up wi-fi.

PagePlus has international roaming in Mexico, Canada, Bermuda and also works in the US Caribbean in Puerto Rico and the USVI. Have heard mixed results on whether it will roam properly though in all of these destinations. All of these roaming destinations are at higher rates so it's a good idea to have a higher balance before traveling to them. Did your Dinc2 go into roaming mode when you were in Mexico?

On the GSM side, Mexico can be roamed on some AT&T prepaid sims...usually directly with GoPhone. Should have both voice at only a quarter a minute and data at 2 cents a kilobyte(that could add up real fast). http://www.wireless.att.com/learn/in...al-roaming.jsp Not sure if ST will roam though (they are an AT&T reseller)...did it roam in Mexico or just show "no service"?

It's also possible to get a Telcel or Movistar Mexcio prepaid sim card in the US in advance of travel. Have seen as low as five bucks for an unactivated sim card and around $25-$30 for a pre-activated card. Pre-activated is more desirable because most visitors have to present a passport, etc., to get the sim chip activated at a carrier store in Mexico.

It did go into roaming when I entered Mexico except dope me hadn't thought to add any cash balance to my account before leaving since I had planned on getting a local SIM. Also, the ST SIM didn't work either. Phone had a great signal most of the time except for a few areas, but no service either through PPC roaming or ST SIM. Next time I'm gonna go ahead an purchase a Telcel SIM stateside before I head out. Thanks for the heads up and all the great info. It was sorta nice being on vacation and not having a phone constantly bugging me LOL. This was a true vacation. I was off the grid for 2 weeks. Hahaha..............Never again.
