Keep in mind the option for the Telus Roadside assistance for the year $40 gives you No Minutes per year...

If one is looking for a emergency phone and the cheapest rate, I don't think there is any other option that is as cost effective. Please correct me if I am in error...
Yes true, you get no minutes but you do get up to $250 + tax value on Road Side Assistance, you get 5 calls of Road Assistance a year and each call covers you up to $50 + tax

Correct, The roadside assistance can provide insurance for up to the maximum values you identified. Like any insurance package it provides a peace of mind, and potential savings against a potential loss. In most instances I would believe that 5 calls a year would be considered very unlikely, but not unheard of (For the most reckless). Alas, in my case I haven't called/needed a towing or car service in over 20 years. In this instance, the savings to me are , in eliminating the monthly top up fee, to maintain my existing credit on my account ($100/yr-$40 Roadside assistance) I.E. A $60 value.

TELUS is really putting the customer first with those wholesale changes. Dropping all the great features and services they had to make clients happy.

Telus will return the $40 to your account and you will have 30 days to top up.

If there are charities you already care about enough to donate regularly, you could start whittling down your balance through SMS donation. Here's the full list:

You can also arrange for them to send you a tax receipt.

This won't put any more money in your pocket than the tax deduction, but it gives you the satisfaction that Telus will have to fork out the funds instead of keeping your unused credit, and that you get to support a good cause.

Bravo. Dont worry you will get all the credit for this as I am going to start a thread,
Thanks for the update. I was wondering what they were going to do with paid up accounts...Actually that's good news...I'll have had free roadside assistance, and free extension of my account....I guess now I'll have to use that second 'Trick" you told me about (Unlimited Text Plan for $5) to keep my account going...

Will be? When? Where is the notice about it being discontinued? Last night I checked and it was still listed in the prepaid section add-ons. I need this but don't want to do it until next month.

You will only get the cancellation notice when you sign up... they are refunding people as my account has been credited back.. so it is legit. They will leave it there until july 18th then it will be gone...

I just asked Telus what the status of my Roadside assistance is as I had pre-paid for it for 1 year. Below is their response.

"I have checked your account, and not to worry. The service has been discontinued, which clients will no longer be able to purchase it. Lucky for you that you have it until May 8, 2013 and it will be honoured."

Sometimes, but it's an exception and there has to be a good reason.

You can transfer a balance over to postpaid if you are migrating the account up to $100. Again, on an exception basis they may transfer in the full balance if it's more than $100 when you agree to migrate to a post paid account.

We think everyone should be able to afford a wireless phone. That's why we were the first wireless company in North America to offer pay-by-the-second airtime, and why we don't charge an activation fee. NO scary contract to sign. Immediate national coverage. And a 30-day satisfaction guarantee. Yes, it's finally time to get a wireless phone.
