Question The IMEI provided is not a valid AT&T IMEI

Almost a week after I submitted my iPhone 4 unlock request, I just received two emails from AT&T.

    The first one says:

    "Dear Customer:
Thank you for your recent inquiry regarding your AT&T service. We apologize for any inconvenience this may have caused you. The issue has been resolved.
Should you have any further needs regarding this issue, please do not hesitate to call us at 1 800 331-0500 and reference the tracking number shown above.
    Sincerely,
    AT&T"

and 3 minutes later, the second one:

"Thank you for contacting us regarding your wireless account. As a reminder, you can easily manage your account online at wwwDOTattDOTcom. Below is some helpful information on how to manage your account online.
Please do not respond to this e-mail. This mailbox is not monitored and does not accept mail.

This message, including any offer and attachments, is intended for the named recipient and may contain confidential information. No other person should rely on any offer or information in this message. If you are not the named recipient, please immediately delete this message.
    "
I have attached the pdf file that was attached to the second email.

    What does this mean???

    (more info:
I bought my iphone 4 from another guy, the IMEI on the box matches with the one in the iphone (settings...) and also I have checked it in this website: wwwDOTnumberingplansDOTcom
and the iphone is jailbroken and unlocked by SAM)
    I'm in Europe

    WHAT SHOULD I DO NOW?

It appears that the IMEI was never assigned to AT&T, Check with Apple to see which carrier sold the phone or on behalf of which carrier Apple sold the phone.

-How can I check it with knowing I do not live in USA?
btw, I have the box! and it's from AT&T.
(you mean, that guy might have lied to me! or they had already changed the IMEI!! which one?)
-How can I check if the IMEI is changed?

It could have been stolen from AT&T or Apple. The Apple website is reachable worldwide.

    Damn it!
I just talked to AT&T (for 16 minutes) and they told me they want more information than just IMEI (the person who had the account) and the receipt of purchase (which I don't have it).

    I also talked to Apple;
They told me my iPhone is registered with AT&T.

    what should I do now??

I've spent at least 5 hours between At&t and Apple after receiving the same response, when requesting an unlock code for my iPhone 4.

Here's the back story: I bought my iPhone 4 off eBay during launch week, When I received the device, It was defective (the phone worked fine, the screen just had glue that wasn't dried 100%) , and since At&t and Apple didn't have any replacements available for me locally, A Rep from Apples executive customer relations did a Advance handset exchange for me.

I called At&t, asked to speak to a supervisor in order to request to have my iPhone 4 unlocked, They asked me if I had a number that the iPhone 4 was attached to, I say no, He files the request anyways... The only info he asks for is the IMEI#.

A few hours later, I get the same Ineligibility Invalid IMEI email as you, ... So, I call Apple thinking maybe there was something on their side preventing At&t from submitting my IMEI# to the Apple server.

I explain that this is a replacement phone, and asked to see what network the phone was locked to, The rep says At&t.

I call At&t back, and have them resubmit the request, a few hours later I get an email saying Invalid account. (I didn't give a mobile number since I am not an At&t subscriber)

SO, I call the Apple Executive Customer Relations Rep that did the exchange for me back in 2010, and find out that my (replacement) iPhone was originally assigned to a Japanese carrier, but is NOT locked to the Japanese Carrier.

So today, She calls me, and tells me she has started a new case for me, and explained that this is a replacement phone, etc; and tell me that I should hear something back from At&t in a couple of days.

After getting off the phone with her, I drive to my friends house, put her sim card in my iPhone, make a phone call, then call At&t from the house phone.. Speak to Tech support and ask them to submit a new request, with my friends account attached. (since the last denial letter stated invalid account).

I haven't received anything from them today, but they work pretty fast, so I should hear something by tomorrow.

OP, When submitting your request, Did you provide a valid/closed At&t phone number/account?

That was great info; thanks a lot.
    No, I did not provide a valid/closed At&t phone number/account, because I don't have any account with AT&T.

Do you think I need to make a phone call with it by an AT&T SIM ?! (I live in Germany now).

AT&T also told me that if I send them the buying receipt that will help. but I don't have that one either.

Please let me know if it works for you then I can find someone with AT&T account to resubmit it.

Making a phone call with an At&t sim will not update the imei# on At&t's system.

If the phone wasn't sealed, You need to contact the person who you purchased the phone from, and have THEM submit the request for you.

Give the person the Imei#, and ask them to contact At&t customer care to request the unlock code... As long as their account is in good standing, and they don't owe At&t any money, At&t will unlock the phone for them.

You HAVE to have an account for the unlock request to go through....

I tried using a friends account, and because the phone was never activated on her account, they denied it again.

SO, I went through my eBay feedback, and found the person I bought the iPhone from and asked if they could contact At&&t for me, and request the unlock code. Seller is going to do it tomorrow.

As soon as she opens a case, i'll fax At&t's unlock department proof of the warranty replacement, and they should be able to unlock it for me.

I actually am on the phone with Apple (they are supposed to connect me to AT&T just to say that the IMEI is correct, it's been 27 minutes till now that I'm on the phone).

I can't connect the person I bought the iphone from. (I don't know him, and I bought it from another country).

    OK;
    I'm editing this post;
Finally after 34 minutes, somebody from AT&T told me that I HAVE to have an AT&T account which has been on for at least 6 months (or a friend would do the work) and then resubmit it through that account. He then said everything would be fine.

Now, I have to find someone.

    Update on my case:

I contacted the person who I bought the phone from, We faxed At&t proof of purchase, and the request was still denied.

APPARENTLY the phone is locked to At&t, AND another network (Mobicom)... The Mobicom network lock status shows as "Pending", so it's preventing At&t from submitting their unlock request to the Apple servers.

The Executive customer relations rep I've been working with doesn't get it.
I asked how At&t can see that the phone is locked to their network, but there is a PENDING request from Mobicom.

If the replacement iPhones paper work was correct, The phone should not have a pending unlock request for another carrier.

My theory is, someone at Apple was being lazy or rushing when they re-imei'd the phone, and they didn't make sure to update the phones Lock status to At&t only.

The iPhone 4 in question was a replacement sourced from the factory to replace my Original iPhone 4 that had a problem with the screen. (un-dried glue spots)...

I bet the phone was supposed to go to another carrier, but when Apple had thousands of people exchanging phones out due to the un-dried glue problem, they just re-imei'd phones to use as replacements.

Apple unlocked my iPhone for me.

For anyone getting the invalid Imei# generic response from At&t when requesting an unlock, I would check to make sure the phone is only network locked to ONE network, and not two.
