I think you speak for many!

What will help in addition to the ongoing Network Vision overhaul, is Sprint postpaid subs moving off of 3G and 4G WiMAX onto LTE. Plus a portion of prepaid subs in WiMAX markets will be using 3G less as 4G WiMAX is unlimited.

Thus all of these factors result in fewer total subs on the 3G network as it's being overhauled and rebuilt to better performance. http://www.howardforums.com/showthre...ion-initiative

Looking at Clearwire's coverage map, it's a mixed bag. The major markets have decent coverage, but many mid-sized markets in the US have partial coverage, or none whatsoever. That might frustrate some subscribers who think they'll have 4G, when there's only spotty service two miles from their house.

There's also the fact Sprint isn't going to invest even a dime in WiMax any longer. The hit-and-miss coverage will stay that way in those markets, and the EVO V 4G isn't capable of supporting LTE.

    Not true at all

Two different networks maintained by two different operators.

It's up to Clearwire, not Sprint to maintain, invest or expand anything relating to Wi-Max.

There's too much confusion as Clearwire is an independent network operator. They could wholesale to Verizon if they wanted to.

I just checked their coverage map and it looks like only downtown is covered for the most part and there won't be any coverage at my house. Pity, with 4g speeds I would have considered buying the mobile hotspot to replace my cable internet if there is truly no caps on 4g speeds.

I for one love this 4G. I am having extreme luck since Clearwire WiMax has very good coverage in NYC. The "needing good luck" would be having Evo 3D price drop below $250 (hopefully with promo and discount).

Clearwire said it has identified the first 5,000 WiMAX cell sites it will upgrade to time-division-LTE (TD-LTE), a variant of LTE that uses the same frequencies for the uplink and downlink rather than splitting them into separate channels. It’s targeted 8,000 sites in total for the first stage of its build out, though it hasn’t announced any plans to expand beyond its WiMAX footprint yet.
Clearwire's next-generation LTE Advanced-ready network will operate according to the 3GPP Band 41 specification, which aligns to Clearwire's 2.6 GHz spectrum frequency

Not sure if that means when they upgrade a tower to LTE, that they will kill off the wi-max. I assume they would since they will be using their own wi-max spectrum.
For example, Chicago is scheduled to be changed over to LTE on clearwire in the first half of 2013..so does that mean anyone in the Chicago area who buys a Vm/Boost wi-max phone will no longer be able to access wi-max in Chicago by mid 2013, and be forced back down to the Sprint 3g service?

That's a good question. My guess is that the upgrades won't upset those who already have WiMax service.

When carriers began the upgrade to 3G back in the mid-2000s, people with phones that only supported 1X were still able to use data. However, phones that had 3G capability could fully utilize the new standard, and switch to the old one if necessary.

I would suspect that LTE may have similar backwards-compatibility. If you have a phone that doesn't support LTE (like the EVO V 4G) you can still probably receive the older WiMax signal. My guess is that the LTE service will placed "on top of" the WiMax service, just like 3G was placed on top of 1X.

Just a guess, though. I can't imagine Clearwire wants to have millions of angry customers with modems that no longer work with their planned 4G LTE rollout.

Clearwire’s LTE plans reinvent the mobile operator

    What happens to WiMAX?

But amid the Clearwire move to LTE, what happens to the existing WiMAX network? Clearwire CTO John Saw says it will remain intact. The company will use 20 MHz of spectrum for LTE and reserve 10 MHz for WiMAx and operate both networks side-by-side. In most cases the equipment is designed to do just that.

Clearwire has 160 MHz in the top 100 markets.

So my educated guess was right.

That's good to hear. Backwards compatilibility is not only a nice perk, but an economic necessity for most technology-based endeavors. 4G is no different.

No backwards compatibility. I'd read the article again.

Now we know why the carriers want their reps to know as little as possible but just enough that's necessary.
