BGR has posted up that Apple is looking to sever the cord with Google and it's mapping application. Going in house with iOS 6 and will be supposedly cleaner and faster.
Anything is better then the current version of Google maps I say.
If it's anything close to what you can get on Android it will be a welcome change.
They have purchase 3 leading edge Map technology companies over the last few years.... what ever they build it will likely bet different than what we have now... However I suspect there will be a lot of equivalent features to what google is doing on android.
I think it will be a good thing. Hopefully they implement native turn by turn navigation, etc..
Initially sounds great but there are concerns before features are considered:
History of emails, SMS, MMS links on iOS (previous if implemented in iOS6) if these links will work?
What of accurate Traffic, public transit (bus/train/light-rail), and walking mapping functionality users are used to?
How will current applications using existing API's be able to use any new mapping solution? Will a re-write of developers be required? Just how difficult will the rewrite be? Will this depend on whether or not a map is invoked to launch outside the application vs a map invoked within the application using the API?
So change is good but how much work will it take developers outside of Apple for users to enjoy?

Apple has been very good with their APIs and since the location services API is an iOS API layer on top of the actual map functions, I suspect it will be a drop in replacement just taking over the same calls. The question of map urls in email etc is another story... I don't think they can get away with redirecting them to their own service... It might start opening them in safari in which case the basic maps functions are provided by google in a mobile interface anyway so it should not be that bad.
I just use Skobbler with the Open Maps project. It has outstanding voice turn by turn navigation. It's free and I can download ahead of time. It's already way better than Google on Android.
It makes sense for Apple to move away from a map system provided by their main competitor. I'm actually really looking forward to see what comes of this.
Google will likely offer a Maps App in Appstore anyway.
If you commonly type the name iPhone as "Iphone" or "I-Phone"... or if you commonly refer to an iPod Touch as an "iTouch" or "I-Touch"...... Then you deserve whole bottle of habanero hot sauce poured into your eyes!
