    Few Quick Questions Regarding Chatr

    Hello,
I am currently using Mobilicity. Due to connectivity issues and my travelling, I am planning to move to Chatr.
35$ Plan sounds great. I can use the bonus for Internet. 100MB is good for me since I only use it for Emails or WhatsApp/Viber etc. I have few questions

    1) Is the signal reception equivalent to the Rogers/Fido network ?
    2) Travelling between Ottawa & Toronto , would i be charged roaming or not ?
    3) Is there any roaming, within Ontario ?
    4) I have HTC Panache by Mobilicity. Can I use it if I am OK with low speed of GPRS[ With Email] It do not make any much of a difference
    5) Any activation charges ?

    Thanks in Advance

P.S What are your thoughts on Koodos.

same network, different coverage, not good for Canadian roaming out of city zone becuase of extra charges, but great 20 cents USA roaming, including LD cost back to Canada

anonymous sign up ok' just get SIM and prepaid voucher, pay cash, activate no fee, no real name needed

koodo charges extra on CSR calls, chech their price list, so go with Virgin Mobile, similar plans

    1. No. Rogers/Fido subs get coverage from kenora to sault ste. Marie. Chatr subs don't. I don't know if other places like this exist.

    2. Yes you will be charged roaming

    3. Yes outside Ottawa and toronto. Also it won't work in northern Ontario.

    4. Newer places don't have rogers 2g. Many buildings won't have rogers 2g. I can give you examples in Edmonton but I am not familiar with Toronto.

    5. No

how does roger/fido get coverage from kenora to sue saint marie but chatter clients do not? if theyre same network, whitch was mentioned earlier, wouldn't the chatter have bars of SEEG also? so confusing the towers are for everyone, how can a tower not let a chatter connect to it?

Chatr is 3g voice, so it will connect to rogers network but you will be charged for roaming. My dad does travel a fair bit and has had no problems getting coverage. That being said outside a chatr zone he is roaming and I think it is 25 cents a min to receive or make a call. Give them a ring I am sure they can sort you out.

Not really true. If you look at Chatr phone, you will see that none of them is 3G. So it uses mostly 2G network.

However, if you plug in the SIM card into a 3G phone, it will use the 3G network.

So I don't think that's how Rogers controls access. I think it's more based on tower ID's. Only certain ID's are considered "in-zone"

Honestly, do it makes difference in call quality if you are on 2g and 3g ?

Huh? How is it not really true? If the 3g icon pops up is 3g no? As I said 3G voice.

Ahaseeb I would have to say I think there is a difference in call quality. At times I am thinking it is a land line when I am talking to my dad.

The network is 3G, what gave you the idea it was a 2g network?
If my handsets show the 3G icon then...

You said "chatr is 3g voice"

That is not true. Officially, chatr phones are 2g voice phones... look at their website, none of them has 3g. So it is a service designed to operate on 2g GSM phones.

However, some people have success to use their SIM card on 3g network, they do so at their own decision. It is not prohibited or supported. So if you have trouble connecting to a 3g network, like using your iPhone, they will not care. Because iPhone (3G) is not even sold on chatr... so don't expect them to help you troubleshoot dropped calls on your 3G phones.

This is clearly outlined in their website, under FAQ, General Info.

"It’s important to note that the non-chatr phones must be GSM with 850/1900 mHZ frequency and unlocked."

So there, phones "must be" GSM, ie 2G.

I do see your point but the fact remains that it is a 3G service. Chatr much like wind will not troubleshoot your handset if it is not one of theirs. I suggest you get a handset and put in a chatr sim and see for yourself. I do not recall for sure but I do believe that from day 1 it was showing 3g on my handset. ( a Nokia n95-8gb ) But I do see your point the offerings as far as handsets were 2g, but the service is 3g. Not a bad deal if you ask me.

As far as " phones "must be" GSM, ie 2G. " thats a given pretty much as any handset will work.
