Why doesn't Google Voice work?

My husband and I are both out of contract, but not eligible for upgrades. Both of our phones have major battery issues and will only work for 30 min to an hour.
Where can we port our numbers so we can upgrade with Sprint and then port back in? (We would like to keep the numbers, have had them for over ten years with Sprint) Google Voice does not work with either of our numbers, but is there something similar that I can use?
Thanks!
Theresa
Why doesn't Google Voice work?
The obvious choice would be a prepaid service. If one uses Google Voice, one has still to have wireless service to make and receive calls. With a prepaid service, one can use it until eligible to be new customers with Sprint.
Google Voice will allow a port in only they have service available in the local area of the incoming numbers. For example, if your wireless number is assigned to "Wide Spot, AZ," Google Voice must have service in the local calling area for "Wide Spot, AZ." I hope that I did not use a real location.

The point that I was making is that if the Original Poster wanted wireless service they would have to sign up with someone else while waiting to be eligible to get phones from Sprint. If they did not want service, they would live with the faulty phones until eligible.
They must have let someone else on their family plan use their upgrades. Normally you are eligible for upgrades before the contracts end.
