We are considering switching from a contract plan with another carrier to Tmobile Monthly 4G.
Are there any monthly fees or taxes (other than the sales tax for the refill card or minutes)?
Also - on the Android phones on this plan (Samsung Exhibit II for example) - is it possible to temporarily turn off Tmoblile's data service and just use the Android on available local wifi?
If we purchase the plan with phone at Walmart does it include the first month's service or only the phone?
No monthly fees or taxes. You can buy the top up cards at callingmart.com and get discounts, no tax and points.
If you are in range of wifi, your phone should let you know and you can join that wifi network. Then it won't use data from your plan. My phone is always on wifi at home after initially setting it up with the password.

TIA!
If you purchase any of the phones at Walmart with the "Monthly4G" box (such as the Exhibit II) you will get the phone + SIM Kit + Activation Code + $3.34 in your account. You can then go online and activate the SIM card and place it on any plan you want.
You can also switch between plans without an issue except for the $30 100 mins/Unlimited Text/(5GB Web) which will only appear once when you initially activate.

Do you mean turn turn it off as in not paying for it?
If so then no, If you are in any of the Monthly 4G plans that have data
However as an alternative, you could sign up to either the "Pay By The Day" or "Pay As You Go" plans and just pay for cellular data when you use it.
If you mean turn it off as in deactivating the radio (modem) and forcing Wifi only then yes.
theirs no fees per say but if you go over your 100 minutes you will be charged 10 cents a minute if you have any balance in your account. yes you can turn off all data on the phone and use wifi only. when you buy the phone it only comes with the phone. so you will need to pick up at least 30$ in prepaid cards.

What I mean is turn off the modem so that I am not using any of the paid for 5g and using wifi instead where wifi is available so that I conserve the 5g for when I really need it during the month.
From what has been responded so far, I see that the answer is yes to that.
Unless you have alot of background apps running that sync often and download data just having the data "on" and not using it will barely use any data. But you can turn on airplane more then use wifi if you choose.
5GB is alot, and it isn't a hard cap.. If you reach that you still will have internet, however just recently someone posted about being throttled and it appear they were barely getting 60kbps on full signal after they reached the 5GB.
There are also tons of data tracking programs such as 3G Watchdog.

Sort of unrelated to the OP, the overage charges per minute are what I was looking to find. $0.10/min is pretty reasonable. But do you have any source for that info? I looked all over TMo's prepaid site and could not figure it out. I am about to jump ship from VM USA to TMo for the $30 5GB plan, and just want to have all my bases covered.
