I recently bought a used Optimus v that has been rooted and is currently running CyanogenMod 7. I have not activated the phone yet.
The phone is supposed to be in good condition but I have no idea if I want a rooted phone running CyanogenMod 7. Is this a good or a bad thing for a newbie?
Another thing I don't understand is that I was told the phone is factory reset. Doesn't factory reset mean it's back to it's default settings...which would mean it has been 'unrooted'?
Is it more difficult to learn than the Android 2.2 operating system?
Can a phone be UN-rooted?
You should start here: http://www.cyanogenmod.com/about
Yeah, factory reset means its back to stock and empty (no personal info). They likely meant it was reset back to new/empty as in no Google account associated with it. And yes you can un-root it and put the stock ROM back on.
From what I know, this is essential for activation. Trying to activate a phone while it is running cyanogen has a good chance of semi-bricking it. Unfortunately we pretty much have to piece together all the google programs for the cyanogen mods, and even then I am missing programs from my stock build. If you can't get an exact mirror of the optimus V's original state then activating it may be dangerous, even if you are running a vanilla 2.2.1 ROM.
I have kept my backup on my SD card to use when I plan to sell the phone so that it can be reactivated. Sadly this guy didn't care as much before he sold his.
Are you sure about this? I have my V up for sale right now and it has BACKside ROM on it. Guess I better set it back to factory.
edit: Looked around on a couple of forums and you are right. Seems like some Froyo roms can activate but nothing GB or higher. Here is a thread with the stock ROM in it: http://forum.xda-developers.com/show....php?t=1025911

i had an ov i rooted and then sold to my friend who put backside cm7 on there he ended up giving it back when he got a slider and we had a problem getting into the ##847446# menu to edit the msn and msid when we out it back on my account.
we made a backup, then we recovered the backup post root/pre cm7 and got into the ## menu, changed the phone number. recovered back into the post root/post cm7 backup and everything was good.
Is this the best, most stable rom for the OV?
I'm looking for a rom that is fully functioning. It doesn't have to be super cool or anything. I just need to get rid or all the crapware and be able to move apps to sd card.
If it helps, my wife has an OV running 2.2.1
Any suggestions and info is greatly appreciated.
Thanks everyone!
Sent from my Motorola Triumph running the "Sharp" rom using Howard Forums!
Yes..
I suggest Mirage iho cm7.2, it can be found on here or androidcentral. It is a bare bones cm7 rom, everything works, it is as fast as a GB ROM gets, and it doesn't use a lot of resources. Nothing but good reviews for it, I ran it for months.
