Sure, retail or find a newer used phone on ebay, craigslist, or wherever you can find it. Or buy the subsidized phone and take paying an ETF as a given if you find a better deal elsewhere. After you've paid the ETF, nothing stops you from selling your phone to help recoup costs. ETF is inconvenient, but it doesn't keep you from moving your number to another provider for a better deal. It's not as if they're going to come lock you up if you need to take a month or two to pay off the ETF.
I've been m2m for a few years -- since about 2 yrs after the 9800 was released. Re-upped on St. Pat's Day for a T-bolt but reset everything when I returned it on April FD.
Without unlimited data, I just don't see the Lady in Red to be worth her assking price any more. Would like to get one last subsidy, but not if it changes one tittle of my contract or locks me in 'two' long. If the vzw SGSIII has that 64GB SD and ICS.4 -- neither likely -- (+mp3 ringtones?) then I'd want one. But factor in the ETF and there's no significant savings.
Aside: kbman, if GS3 drops w/o mp3 ringers, is that an easy ROM fix?
Oops, he's not in this thread?

Okay, just trying to understand your thinking. You're only trying to get one last subsidy, not trying to "lock in" or "extend" unlimited?
Because the first works, the second doesn't. And 3g or 4g is irrelevant. Many are confused. What are you using now?
If I'm annoyed and you're annoyed, does that make us a paranoid ??

Correct, that's one reason I'm wary of long extension. When unlimited dies, she ain't worth it any more, I'm outa here. W/o vzw unlimited LTE, an old Epic on Boost would be a much better deal. Door won't hit me in the butt.
$ubsidy is only about a good cheap LTE handset to go out on. May settle for Tbolt &/or Xoom, was hoping for D4 MAXX HD but, like SGSIII, it probly won't have any SD anyway. And surely will have that damn PLAN chip.

TC - you shouldn't be concerned about the PLAN chip. It sounds a little creepy, and I'm not a fan of big brother either. With that being said though, I read the technicals on it and it's benign as far as I can tell. If big brother wanted to do the really horrible stuff to your cell phone, they can do it anyway just by giving the cell company a call and have them intercept calls or shut off service without a plan chip.

So, I "shouldn't be concerned" unless it's "really horrible"?
For me, none of that makes it one bit less un-American. And yes it is creepy.
Somebody had to shell our a C-note + to get those 'technicals', you?
That's a little too secretive for something we are expected to suppose is benign.

The OP was gratuitously called "a nut case" when I first posted the link. Aside from right or wrong, he sounds clear-headed to me. You may not agree, that's America, but unsolicited ad hominem usually means substance enough to scare vested interests.

Yeah, tc, i agree with above. It is creepy especially with that "presidential alert" setting on my phone. Bad name, "national emergency" is more fitting.
But its no different than air sirens, storm shelters, 911, etc. Government has a responsibility to protect the public and no candidate who opposed that would win. I imagine it's part of overblown Homeland Security Act. (I say that because of Cheney/yellowcake/invasion/casualties/unbearable debt/ruined economy fiasco).
why is the Verizon unlimited data plan so **** expensive!?
Verizon only offers unlimited data plans for 6700 now?
