    Pathetic speeds upon activation?

I just activated my new Galaxy Nexus under a new T-Mobile account ($30, 100 min / 5GB plan), but am super disappointed with the speeds so far... I'm only seeing download speeds of 200-800k on Speedtest. I called tech support and they told me to wait a few hours and call back if it persists. Can anyone tell me if this is normal behavior upon activation?

Also, my status bar is showing a grey H next to the bars (1 blue bar) instead of 4G. Is this normal? Aren't we supposed to see 4G in the notification bar?

I should also mention that I'm in an area that is designated as very good 4G coverage on T-Mobile's coverage map.

H is HSPA(+), 3G is UMTS, E is EDGE, G is GPRS, and none is no data connectivity.

Edit: Yeah, one bar is an extremeley weak signal. There are a lot of weak spots with T-Mobile. I can go 1 quarter mile and go from Edge to full 4G (H). The fastest I've seen in my area is 6.5M/1.5M, the norm is 1.5M/1.5M, at home indoors, 500K/500K.

So... is seeing the H normal? I thought the service was supposed to be 4G?

So much for high speed surfing on my phone... looks like I bought a Ferrari but it's going to be powered by hamsters.

Try getting out of the house to the extent that you might connect with a different tower. Maybe there's a problem with the one nearest you (or wherever you're reporting from currently). Wouldn't be the first time.

By the way, does your phone show an "H" or "4G"? I can't get a good answer out of tech support.

I'm in South Jersey, right outside Philly. I'm getting download speeds of about 250kb. Horrible!

Message #3 above indicates that "H" is 4G- it's what your phone shows. It also points out that 1 bar is a very weak signal.

Have you gotten outside/gone somewhere else, to see if you get more bars and higher speeds?

I've tried it in two locations now, and a couple times my speed test went as high as 2MB. But then it would drop right back down to 200-700 kb. Maybe I'm too critical, but I really hoped for more out of "America's largest 4G network". I don't live in the sticks - I can see Center City Philly from where I am sitting right now.

I had fast data out of the gate when I activated the $30/5gb on my galaxy nexus global a few days ago. it is certainly location dependent. On my local "flag pole" I am getting 7014/2358 just now. It's obviously not heavily used. At work I get 1500-2000ish down. The phone toggles between saying HSPA+ and HSDPA. Speeds do not seem to change regardless of what it says so I am not sure what Samsung looks at to set the string.

Don't worry you're not missing out much with 5 bars GPRS. Surfing the web at speedy 44kbps ah yeah!!
