We're to get in flight calling on Virgin Atlantic

    http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/technology-18093145

Mobile access will be provided by AeroMobile, and only customers of European carriers Vodafone and O2 or the US carrier T-Mobile will be able to make calls.
Note: I'm a BzzAgent - I get to try stuff and let people know about it. You can ask me questions about it and I'll give honest feedback not advertising fluff...

I have tried to use Virgin's U.S. wifi service when in the air. My BBerry shows UMA (wifi voice) is connected, but I can only stay connected for a few seconds. SMS works ok. Since I take their red eye across country, don't usually bothering paying for wifi. For a few years, there was free wifi around Xmas on Virgin, sponsored by Google.
GoogleVoice (domestic call forwarding and cheap intl. calls)

T-Mobile lines on unlimited "family" plan - me, wife. Cost is about $80 a line incl. 5GB/mo. data on each line. We have had no landline in 7 years

learn something new here every day. I would have thought it was over Wi-Fi.

    From the provider - Aeromobile:

    How it works

A small mobile base station (pico cell) installed onboard, connects calls, SMS & data via satellite to networks on the ground.

AeroMobile technology manages all mobile devices onboard. We ensure that whilst there is a great reception onboard for passengers, signal strengths are managed to make sure there is no interference with other onboard systems.
