How to get MMS working on factory unlocked iPhone 4?

I have searched through the forums and trying to get my MMS working. Things seem to be a bit confusing since I have a factory unlocked iPhone 4. I have loaded the profiles from unlockit.co.nz and my internet is working fine. But, I am not able to send or receive MMS to or from non iPhone users. From what I am reading I need to jail break my phone even though it is factory unlocked correct? Then downloan Cyndia and then the TetherMe app to change the APN? Or is there another way to access my APN settings? Another method I am reading is getting a T-Mobile sim to access the APN settings...this is for iPhone 4S correct?

A little history of my iPhone 4:
Purchased from Apple Singapore in 2010 and factory unlocked
I have been using Straight Talk for 4 months and internet is working fine.

I just emailed Unlockit yesterday, and asked that they update the Straight Talk profile to include the correct MMS settings.. Haven't heard anything back tho.

I have a 4S. I went the jailbreak and tetherme route, and haven't had any problems. But I also haven't upgraded to the new iOS version because I don't want to lose jailbreak. I haven't done much tweaking at all, but absolutely love SB settings, and wouldn't want to lose it.

There are two other methods. One is to insert a tmobile sim, go into the settings app, and the menu that has all those settings will appear. You switch back to the ST sim and then put in the settings. I am probably skipping a few steps, just search the forum for sim swap method.

The other method involved editing a couple data files on your computer and then reloading the edited files to your iPhone. It is described in this thread.

If you go one of these routes, you may or may not need to install the unlockit profile. Some have had issues with it conflicting with these solutions, others have not. Depends on which of these you use. Report back and let us know how you get along or if you need more help.

From what I am reading the T-Mobile sim swap only works with 4s iPhones. I have a 4 and it doesn't seem to work. It looks like I need to jailbreak it or do the data files.

    Anybody else?

From what I've read , an unlocked iPhone 4 can use the sim swap to open the menu up. Personally I like using the file editing method. Once you make the changes its a quick restore of just those 2 files and you are set. Updating to 5.1.1 did'nt have any effect on my apn settings.

I've read several times that the TM sim trick works on the 4s but not the 4?

Jailbreak available for weeks on 5.1.1. So you can use that route to get MMS to work.

Does a factory restore always remove the jailbreak?

Yes, factory restore always deletes the jailbreak.

Jailbreaking takes few minutes to complete and is the best thing you can do for your iPhone. Using a non-jailbroken iPhone is foolish as Apple's default restrictions extremely limit the device.

Do you have a link for a recommended jail-break?

Pete, here is the link to the Green Pois0n website (http://greenpois0n.com/). Just read and follow their directions.

I'll go ahead and post the directions below as well:

"How To Use Absinthe 2.0 (if you’re unjailbroken):

    1. Make a backup of your device in iTunes by right clicking on your device name under the ‘Devices’ menu and click ‘Back Up’.

    2. Once your backup is complete return to your device and go to Settings – General – Reset – Erase all Content and Settings. This will make the jailbreak process much faster.

    3. Open Absinthe and be sure you are still connected via USB cable to your computer.

    4. Click ‘Jailbreak’ and wait…. just be patient and do not disconnect your device.

    5. Once jailbroken return to iTunes and restore your backup from earlier. Right click on your device name under the ‘Devices’ menu in the left panel of iTunes and click ‘Restore from Back Up…’ then select the latest backup you created before. (restoring this backup will return all the content previously on your device ie, apps, photos, etc.)

    6. Thanks for using Absinthe, enjoy your jailbroken iDevice!"

Please skip 2 and 5, there is honestly no need to do that. I've jailbroken dozen of iPhones without ever doing that!

After doing a backup of your iPhone.
Download the absinthe file then extract the files. Connect your iPhone to the USB cable and close iTunes.
Click jailbreak on absinthe and wait fr it to be done, don't disconnect device.
It will reboot on its down and once it says Done - Enjoy! then you are done!

Cydia app will then show up and first thing you should do is get Installous.

Good move in deciding to jailbreak, took some courage from your part! Enjoy it!
