    Roaming in France - Provider Recommendations

    Hey guys,
    Going to EU in June. I've already got my UK sim arranged (www.giffgaff.com) but need a SIM for France for a few days. Primarily need it for data usage, but some local France airtime would be great too. Any recommendations. GiffGaff is 10 pounds for 250 minutes, unlimited data, 250 texts. Something similar for France would be great.

    I would suggest you contact Vodafone and see if they will have the EU roaming pkg again summer. There was talk they may do it again this year.

    Whoa! You can't even get that here with a decade-long contract! We talking true unlimited data here?

    ^Unlimited on-device data (UNPDA / UMB equivalent on Bell). And those minutes are UK wide btw.

    I lived there for six months. You basically have the choice of three (prepaid) providers: SFR (aka Vodafone), Orange, and Bouygues ("bweeg"). I chose SFR because you get bonuses if you fill up beyond a minimum (like 10e, 20e, 40e, etc): free LD mins, unlimited SMS, etc, whereas I don't think Orange or Bouygues offered that. Bouygues had the lowest calling rates (IIRC) but they were more expensive in some other ways. VM and CID are included in all three (naturellement). You can get a day or month pass for iPhone data from SFR (unlimited for like 8e/day I think) but I never did that. I suggest going to their websites, though it'll be a lot easier to navigate if you can read French.

    My biggest qualm with SFR was their lack of service coverage in places that Orange had full bars. If you want the most coverage Orange is the way to go.

    Hope this helps...

    I see SFR offers 10 Euros for iPhone unlimited data for 7 days. Does it HAVE to be used on an iPhone or will any MicroSIM device work?

    Also, does SFR require any valid ID or anything for activation?

    ^last time i went i was able to buy ORANGE prepaid at the airport; u can also check on ebay since u can activate online and fill your credit; IF you need your number in advance that is...;

    again, ORANGE does have better coverage; think of it as the BELL equivalent VS Rogers (wink, wink...)

    Not really concerned about "coverage". Just need it to work in Paris, and I need something with a reasonable data amount for 3 days of Google Maping, Facebook, and picture uploads.

    You might want to check www.prepaidgsm.net. They have a lot of experience with European roaming rates.
