    Porting number & Data usage

Hi everybody, new guy here. I'll be coming over to Straight Talk from Sprint as soon my HTC Vivid arrives. I'm really excited about the move and hopefully (like most of you guys) will experience faster data speeds and better call quality. I'm getting the $45 plan with the AT&T Sim. The posts I've read have been very informative and have given me some idea as to what to expect.
I have a question about porting, If it takes several hours to port my number, I know I can't make calls, but can I use the phone for data just to see if it works?

Not sure which phone you have (going to buy) but almost 99.9% sure it is wifi. Given that fact, you can use it to log onto data sources, email, web etc. I bought the HTC One X and had it for 2 days prior to getting on ST. I managed to get everything set, launcher, apps, screens etc.
As far as porting goes.................i did this yesterday. After trying ST and the phone for 12 days i pulled the trigger. I plan to keep the phone so i ported my regular number. I came from Page Plus and i needed my account number and pin number. All took only about 30 minutes. Should happen quite fast as long as your info is accurate.
I for one am very happy with the service (AT&T sims use the AT&T towers. They are strong in my area) and the phone (love the One X).

If i can be of any help just ask

Oh.........BTW..........data usage is not an issue for 99% of us. There are quite a few threads on here complaining about data but it is my guess the folks are "data hogs". In 13 days i have only used 258mb of data. The phone is "wide open" all the time. I for one at least do 90% of the time use my TV for movies, my stereo for music, and my PC for youtube. LOL
With VZW........BAD network where i live and work!
    Changed to ATT..........

Thanks Lenny, I hope I'm responding correctly, I'm new to this posting thing.
So I can't ST data but I can use wifi, that's good to know.
I see you are from the northeast, I'm 40 miles northwest of Philly...I hope the AT&T signal is good out here.
The phone is an unlocked HTC Vivid, it's on the AT&T site so I figured it should work well on the AT&T system.
    Thanks again
    Den

It will work fine with att ST sim. I came from sprint and my porting was done within 5 minutes. I ported 2 lines over from sprint. no issues. the only issue i ran into was that I needed to get new sim cards. Basically ST allows only one number per sim card so in my case when I activated sim cards to test out the service I was then unable to port my number to these cards. I had to call customer service who sent me replacement sim cards. After they arrived i called them back and ported numbers over. It took 5 minutes both times and had no issues. Make sure you have your sprint account number and PIN associated with an account and you'll be fine

Thanks for the tips, I have all my Sprint info ready to go...I'll be porting my number without testing.

Did you have to purchase a new SIM to port over your number?

Customer service sent you those replacement sim cards to port your #'s for free?
    You didn't have to get a new activation code/serial # (Account #) ?

I have ported a few #'s over to Straight Talk for family and friends and I can say that if the sim card they send you is good and you provide the right information then the port is quick, maybe 15 minutes to an hour.
But for some reason, they tend to send sim cards that have a # attached to them already or sim cards that were already activated...it's really weird. They did send replacements for free.
I'm wondering if they send a replacement for free to someone who already activated a line and decided they wanted to port. Don't you lose your balance and start over?
