Call me crazy, but I would like to disable EDGE data on my iPhone and use GPRS only. I have found no way to do this so far, and need help. To explain further, I only want my iPhone using GPRS, no EDGE or 3G. Is this possible?

All any iPhone would allow you to do is to turn 3G on or off. You are really toggling the voice mode and not the data mode. Because 3G controls both voice and data, turning off 3G turns off both. When you turn off 3G, you are changing voice mode to GSM. The cellular site determines whether data are transmitted at GPRS speed or EDGE speed. The only way to insure only GPRS data speed would be to use a phone incapable of
using EDGE.
You, of course, can turn off all cellular data but that would disable data at all speeds.
I see that SBSettings has the option for an "Edge" switch. Would this accomplish the OP's objective of turning it off? If I switch mine off the "E" dissapears and I am still able to make calls and send texts, but nothing that uses data seems to work.
That just turns off data completely. If GPRS were turned on when you turn off EDGE, data would still work at GPRS speed if the cellular site permitted. There should be a "°" icon if GPRS were enabled.

I have an iPhone 2G unlocked on T-mobile that I use as a wifi hotspot for my iPhone 4S so I don't need voice or anything else to be functional, I just want GPRS data.
I am a little confused. My Verizon phone was able to roam on GSM because they used TDMA. Tell it was shutdown. The phone recognizes it as Analog. If PCS has TDMA, It could be technically be used on GSM.

Maybe EDGE is not in as widespread use with T-Mobile as it is with AT&T. According to Wikipedia, EDGE is available in over forty per cent of the GSM footprint of T-Mobile as compared to one hundred per cent of AT&T's GSM footprint.
I guess that the Original Poster is unable to unlock his iPhone 4S to use it directly on T-Mobile.

This doesn't make any sense either, if they are in an area without edge, the phone will automatically go to GPRS. It's not going to stay in Edge if there is no Edge signal.
Right. The phone will automatically choose the best available air interface. Artificially restricting it to GPRS when EDGE is available makes absolutely no sense.
I am using an AT&T MVNO on my 4S and don't have a data plan. I use the $2/day data from my T-Mobile prepaid account to create a WiFi hotspot for use on my 4S on days that i'm not in the office and don't have wifi. The iPhone 2G that I use for tethering falls back onto GPRS for a moment every 30 seconds or so and then reconnects to EDGE. This is not because of spotty EDGE coverage because it happens everywhere I have EDGE. It does not however happen while on GPRS. I am trying to keep the phone on GPRS so my connection isn't interrupted every 30 seconds
