    TMO Monthly 4G plans

TMO has a $30/Month 100 minute unlim text & web plan available online.
I'd like this plan but not with any of the phones they offer with it.
To activate one of these plans you need a SIM card (obviously), a prepaid code (from the box the phone came in), and the IMEI number from the phone.

These three things minus the SIM lead me to think if I provided my own phone, say an HTC One S without the prepaid code and IMEI being attached to that monthly 4G plan. That I wouldn't be able to get the plan phone combo?
Or could I just order the $2 SIM and than call in and activate the $30 plan with another smartphone not on that plans list?

    Clear as mud? Thought so.

You just buy SIM activation kit and get GSM Galaxy Nexus and you're all set.

Yes, you can get the SIM and activate it and put it in any unlocked phone or T-Mobile branded phone that you want.

This is covered in the T-Mobile prepaid forum quite extensively:

Well, you'll need an IMEI. Many (including me) activated the $30/5Gb plan using all 9s in the IMEI field.

Is this true? When activating a sim through Tmo's website the Activation code, the Sim serial and the phone's IMEI are required. One can simply enter all 9s for the IMEI along with the activation code and Sim serial from the $1.99 activation kit, select the 100min unlimited text and web plan and stick that Sim card in any unlocked GSM phone?

Don't know about the website, but I do know if you call in, you can opt to not provide an imei. "About to buy a phone. Want to have an active sim so I can test it out before I buy" etc

    Yes.

I would point out that the 100min plan is throttled after you hit 5gb of data, so it may or may not fit your definition of "unlimited".

My phone is only 3g capable anyway so hopefully Ill be able to continue using 3g after I use my 5gb. Does anyone know if that's right?

What is the name of the data speed after you get throttled?

It's not correct. You will be throttled to 2G speeds which some have found to be not very useful.

You'll continue to be on the 3G network after 5GBs so calls/texts/data still go over the 3G network but your data speeds will be throttled to like 64kbps (2G speeds).

Well I managed to select the $30 100min unlimited web and text plan on my Nexus One but can't get the 3G symbol to show up in my notification bar, only a mixture of G (which I assume is 2G) and E (which I assume is the Edge network). I've tried editing my APN settings, how do I enable 3G?

You're positive that you have 3G in your area, right? If yes, then go into settings > wireless and network > mobile networks > network mode and pick WCDMA only. You can change it to automatic later when it works, so that it switches to EDGE when it has to.
