I originally went through the ST website to port my number from VM. The ST website gacked and assigned a new number rather than porting my old number. I called up within a half hour, once I saw that a new number had been assigned. They deactivated the sim and sent me a new one, saying I had to call in and port/activate in order to retain the $45 month fee I originally paid online. Ok, that's one hour on the phone shot.
Same thing happened to me. What happened was the ST system assigned you a temporary number while the port was in process. It switches automatically to your real number once the port is complete. If you panic (like I did) and report a porting problem too soon, it messes everything up. They definitely need some kind of warning so people don't see the new number and assume something went wrong.

In my case, it took a few days and about three hours on the phone, but they did get it fixed.

Interesting, this must be recent. In the past, they just kept your service deactivated until your number port finished. Most if not all postpaid carriers do what you described above and some prepaids (ie AT&T GoPhone) do it as well but I haven't seen it on ST until now. I ported 8+ months ago and my phone just didn't work until the port finished.

It would be nice if people titled their threads with the issue. I am looking for a particular issue but I have my work cut out for me with topic titles unrelated to content.
