need help finding APN settings page using Gevey Ultra S/iPhone 4S firmware 5.0

just received my Gevey UltraS unlock sim adapter. the gevey website instructions say to first insert the included "setup sim" with the unlock adapter and a setup page should load. the package didn't include a setup sim, so...

i inserted a TMobile SIM with the gevey unlock, and rebooted. i have 4 bars and "TMobile" as the carrier.

next i wanted to enter APN info so as to be able to use the personal hotspot. there is no obvious place to input APN info.

I believe the APN info should be in

    Settings--general--network--carrier data network.

On my 4S running firmware 5.0, with the t-mobile sim/gevey unlock inserted, there is no carrier data network button on the network page. Instead, there is a "personal hotspot" button, with a constantly-spinning gearwheel. clicking on it produces no results.

as a comparison, i have an unlocked 3GS. i inserted the same t-mob sim, and on the settings--general--network page there is a carrier data network button, behind which is the apn entry page. the 3GS is running 5.0.1, and obviously, not using the gevey unlock.

i wanted to get the 4S/gevey adapter working using the tmob sim, since i am traveling to uganda this weekend, and will be buying an MTN sim with data plan, and won't be able to troubleshoot this from there.

    Any ideas?

    thanks in advance

    Ken

if data is currently working, the hotspot should work as well. if not try the http://www.unlockit.co.nz APN changer service. otherwise I would wait for the 5.1.1 untethered jailbreak release so you can install a commcenter patch to allow editing of the cellular network settings.

overdrive31--thanks. the other day the word was the 5.1.1 jailbreak was "days away"--i'm leaving for uganda tomorrow so we'll see if i'm lucky!

any idea why when using the same tmobile sim on an unlocked 3GS on 5.0.1 i can get to the apn settings page? is there a diff in this regard betw 5.0 and 5.0.1?

    thanks

not all unlock methods are alike. has to do with carrier bundles installed and the commcenter restrictions that come with. did you try the APN changing service? does data work currently? the commcenter patch you should get comes with installing TetherMe.

data doesn't work with the tmobile sim i have, but it may not be provisioned for data. i bought it as a 'starter' sim (it was $2 and has 10 minutes talk time on it) just to keep around to check to see that unlocks work. if i do an unlock and pop the sim in, and i get service, then i know the unlock works.

i'm off to uganda in a few hours, and i'll buy a sim when i get there with and have it provisioned for data. i will try both the gevey.com and unlockit.co.nz unlock services and hopefully i'll get it to work.

    thanks

I recommend jailbreaking the iPhone 4S and installing TetherMe, it will install with it, TetherMe APN Editing which will allow you to edit the Cellular Data Network settings, so you can get Data, MMS, and Personal Hotspot working as well.

The unlockit.co.nz APN services does not install MMS settings (as by default, it's restricted by Apple) so it's better to do it through this way, and before you input your settings, make sure to uninstall the profile installed by unlockit.co.nz as it will interfere with the settings.

    report from the field:

i just returned from my trip to uganda.

while there i purchased a sim from MTN and loaded it with both data and airtime.

after inserting the sim with the gevey chip, i rebooted and it worked fine. the provisioning of the account for data loaded the proper APN. however, since i still wasn't able to access the APN settings, i couldn't use MMS. not a killer issue for me.

on the plus side, native iPhone tethering worked great.
