Yes, but if the phone has a SIM card then you will have to have Straight Talk send you another SIM before you can change your number. Once a ST SIM card has been assigned a number it cannot be changed.

I want to buy a phone and test out the service with a temp phone number before I switch. If I do this, will
I be able to port my tmobile phone number after the phone has been activated and used with a temp number?

My suggestion would be get a byod you actually want and order the tmo or att sim (which ever gives you better service; this also determines phone selection to a large extent). If it doesn't work switch to something else. You should be able to sell the phone for close to your purchase price if need be. IF you try a test number there doesn't seem to be a way around shelling out an extra 15 for a new sim (though your could Google voice it).

I ordered the Samsung Proclaim tonight. I'll try it out first to see if the service is ok.
If it works, I'll be ordering 2 more and cancelling my TMobile account. my contract is
up July 17th. Thanks for the replies.
Verizon can pretty much hold their own even without roaming, IMO. Everywhere I've been on my road trips even the places sprint couldn't get a native signal, it roamed on to Verizon.
My T-Mobile phone on the other hand.. think you'll enjoy the difference between Verizon and TMO coverage, with the exception of being limited to 3G data.
If you can live with the slower 3g network (I get 5mb+ on my last TMO line) then it'll probably work out well for you. If not try the bring your own device like mentioned above.
