iPhone 4: other party can't hear me at times

I have noticed that at times (especially downtown, though it has also been in Scarborough), persons on the other line cannot hear me whatsoever, but I can hear them fine.

I am currently using an iPhone 4 (purchased July 2010), and Rogers has done some network resets on their end 2-3 times, and I have reset my network settings a few times as well, but the problem still recurs.

It is very sporadic, sometimes being fine for weeks at a time, only to have a situation like today where for 6/7 calls, I could hear the other person but they could not hear me.

Has anyone experienced this with the same hardware and on Rogers?

Any known solutions? I'm too broke to pay for a new phone and I'm not on warranty anymore since I got this July 2010

how do you hold your phone? if right handed, most people tend to put there pinky under the phone to support it and that covers the mic. next time someone can't hear you, check that.

(when holding the phone screen facing you, tilt it up. the grill on the bottom left is the mic, the one on the bottom right is the speaker)

=.= I guess I should thanks for the suggestion, but no, that is definitely not the issue.

Anyway I read online about other user experiences and there's some hardware issue with the Ball Grid Array chip being misaligned over time. This helped the great majority of users, so I may just send it in for repair for $50.

Any thoughts on shops opening up the phone? I've never done that before and am a bit apprehensive about it.

I doubt it's the phone if it's not a constant issue. More than likely the network is congested.

I wonder if it's a specific network you call through on that give these problems.

unless you use a headset its also common for Iphones to have the mute button on screen accidentally pressed.

    Anyone else experiencing this?

I'm only bumping up this thread because I have 2 other friends (iPhone 4, Galaxy Captivate) who are experience similar audio issues- either other party can't hear, or they can't hear other party.

Its really funny how this is still a constant issue..........Before i used to disable 3G, and then I enabled 3G but don't even really see the difference. I escalated the issue to the Tech supervisor where he asked me to record the timings/dates of called drops, phone calls going to voicemail, losing network and etc etc.............

So after a few weeks I had the list of certain calls and timings that I had recorded. Called them back, and gave the rep the ref#, and all the info....Oh well I get a text the next day telling me my info was not complete....lol......and to call back. Sometimes I just wonder how much time we waste and seriously get nowhere..

So I called back, and they asked me to give them specific numbers to or from where these issues were happening. I was just very frustrated that this was not really necessary as they can easily trace the times and dates of calls...so the rep told me it was a security issue thats why.

Anyways long story short, amazingly I recieve a call from some technician within an hr, and starts telling me there a 4 towers near me and blah blah blah..........this is all I have been hearing for the past 3yrs...So he suggest to me about the Rogers One Number to me.....what a load of crap. And since there are towers near me he really can't do much for me.

I just hope LTE is smooth or else we will hear excuses such as we're still improving the network to better offer u greater services. This 3G network has been in works for the last 4-5 yrs for what I can remember.

Before they had great retention plans, and very little competition. Of course the Bell and Telus Network are improving....if these network issues persist, I wonder how they will deal with it.

I guess launch LTE before anyone else, and then slowly crap out just like 3G. I just hope not....

I have an iphone 4 and I'm having this issue in the Kitchener/waterloo/cambridge area. I'm only 1 KM from the tower and in my home in the last month I've been having issues with tinny sound and cutting in and out. I usually have to call them back on my Vonage.. oh yea but wait, I have the same problem on Vonage because of Rogers internet issues in my area not giving me the proper speed. I swear if they didn't have a monopoly in the area I would leave.

I've also had this happen around Kitchener and southern area of Cambridge all where it worked fine before. I also notice I jump between E and 3G quite a bit and I chalked it up to the phone starting to die. I'm 2 years in November... I think my next phone will be android.

My 4S did that when I first got it. I could make calls and receive them. The other side could hear me, I heard nothing. Both land lines and cell phones.

Apple support had me restore the phone with no luck. After that they replaced it. No issues since. But the dude brough put about 25-30 replacement IPhones. They come in special boxes so you know they are replacements and not for sale.

This was back in oct/nov 2011
