    My data usage warning story..

Hey guys I really didn't wanna make another "I got a warning for data usage" thread but, what the heck, it's the long weekend, and we need reading material.

This all started last night around 1am when I was on my iPad and noticed that the iPhone had no service. Since its jailbroken and not perfect I figured it was a fluke so I restarted...a few times. No dice. So I called straight talk at 130am thinking maybe their calls are routed so far away from the US that it might be daytime there. They were closed. Ok so after I called, and hung up, the data came back. This morning I realized that the web is insanely slow...I mean, crawling. So I called straight talk in Miami and they began to want to troubleshoot my phone. I knew it wasn't my phone and didn't want to attract any attention to my iPhone, so I said I'll call back thanks.

As you guys may remember I've ignored about 4 or 5 calls from that infamous 800 989 1506 number with no messages left. So I figured I'd call the number and answer those questions about data I've heard so much about.

I call and immediately connect with a rep. He asks if I got a message from this number. I said no. He says "well then how did you get this number?". I said I got a call a few days ago with no message I thought I'd call it back. I then had to go through the popular list of questions about data usage, which I played dumb with and said no to everything. He said your speeds will be restored immediately and to restart my phone.

Well the speeds didn't go back to normal and I called back with no avail. They said it must be from your phone. That was 2 hours ago. So during that time I thought up this elaborate plan to port my number to google voice since my cycle is ending in a week and to get a new sim and new account...by the time I got to the shore, my data seems like its back to normal...maybe 85 percent. I can't remember my speeds before but now they're : 5500kbps/412kbps OR 5.5MBps/0.42MBps...is that how it should be ?

Anyway that's my story..I'll be monitoring the speed til my billing cycle seeing as I've heard from people they cut off service right after you replenish so we'll see.

    Enjoy the weekend everyone.

    -Shawn

Have you tried different locations sounds like the tower in your area may have became overloaded that would explain the speed coming back slowly.

Well it sounds like they do throttle now. Did he explicitly mention throttling or the reduced speeds were from overuse of data?

Yeah he did mention it, but I have to say that being a closet rebel I have been streaming Netflix, pandora, downloading apps, music, ...so I mean I haven't been very responsible. Then again it is memorial weekend down the shore, congestion might be playing a role too.

But in all fairness I'll definitely be canceling the unnecessary usage habits because fast / unlimited web browsing is more important to me than the rest.

That's good to know that you were able to reverse the throttling by calling. I guess I'll have to spend some time on the phone today.

Well just figured I'd update what's going on...I'm still having issues with 3G service. It's working only sporadically. When it works, it's fast like normal. Then goes out again. Speed tests are horrible. But here's the weird thing, when I switch to EDGE only it works a lot better. Edge speeds only of course but it actually works. Now I'm having a hard time believing that this is because of the highly increased amount of people within a 1 and 2 mile radius of me, being in a very densely populated beach community. It did start Thursday night when the flow of incoming people started. But unless the cell towers give preference to AT&T users or something I really can't explain what's going on.

My game plan is to wait out the weekend and see what happens mid week, then before my June 6th expiration, if it doesn't get better I guess I'll port my number to google voice so I don't lose it, then get a new straight talk sim and port the number back again to straight talk...I'm hoping that will do the trick....

Edit: I mean at this point I couldn've maybe even mistaken the slowdown in the first place and called straight talk on mY own like an idiot and created all this unnecessary attention...darn, pushing limits is fun

I think it is possible to distingush and prioritize native over MVNO traffic, based on the T&C language.

I thought GV charges $20 every time you port a number to them?!?

Yeah I mean it would be pretty unfair if they couldn't prioritize it for those poor guys paying 120/mo like I used to. They better get some kind of network perks and priority...

Yeah GV does charge 20 bucks each time you port, but I figure that's worth it to: a) get my 3G data back, and b) keep my number while doing so. But see off peak times, like after 10 or 11pm and early morning like now it's totally back to normal...so I really couldn't figure out the slowdown and what's causing it ... :-/

I've heard Google Voice can be a beast to port out of. I'd recommend Page Plus if you have an old Verizon phone lying around (or can borrow one), since they'll let you activate for free if you're porting in. It's also free to port into Boost if you have an unused MEID, which isn't as hard to come by as you'd think.

I ported a number from GV to GoPhone very easily but the port had technical issues. Namely not getting texts from other carriers.

After being on the phone with straight talk rep for about 40 mins the rep stated that the system was sending out random calls to people with straight talk sims just letting them know not to use to much data so if u got a call from them it does not mean u are using to much data she also stated that straight talk speeds vary and the lowest speed we will ever get is 14.5kbs based on tower location also the rep stated that video streaming is ok as long as u don't abuse it or feather or watch porn she said the terms and conditions do not apply to users with AT&T phones as far as streaming movies I know all if this is a lie cause I'm on my second sim card lol but that's what there saying

amazing. these reps either have no conscience or they do not know any better. they might have their commercials playing in their work areas and they are like the rest of the world spew what they hear. maybe.

Those are pretty good ideas. Im gonna see if I have some Verizon phones around. I'm gonna see if maybe this guy has any information about my situation ... http://forum.xda-developers.com/show....php?t=1641966

It seems like I'm getting my loss of 3G exactly in the vicinity where I did 98% of my "unauthorized" usage. streaming and videos. At my gym. I always streamed pandora and watched YouTube instructional videos. I'm thinking maybe I'm being denied 3G service from only those towers? And since I'm pretty sure cell phones connect to more than one tower at a time, that would explain the 3G slowdown at the house about a mile away from the gym. In that case, I'm not even sure that porting numbers back and forth would even do the trick because if my phone number is my identifier, it would be the same number. This is fun...

    Any thoughts ?
