Question Need advice: Taiwan HTC Desire S and Softbank Prepaid SIM?

    Hi all,

My gf owns a HTC Desire S, fully unlocked. We're considering to grab one of the Softbank prepaid phone/plan, as she may only be here for a year or so. We don't need data as her phone can get wifi access in home/workplace but need the phone# so can get in touch easily - atm she relies on wifi heavily and its very limiting.

'--> sorry for not linking properly, wasn't allowed to post links until I've posted a few posts...

I've been reading that it's possible to reuse the softbank simcard into an unlocked phone, provided that the APN settings are correct. If this is true, it'd be great if we can get the SIM into her HTC so that she doesn't have to carry 2 phones around.

Just wondering if anyone have tried this before or not, or know a working APN setting for this circumstance? upon reading the forum, I find that there's a few APN set flying around - not sure which is is recent, and which one is to be used for which circumstance.

Any help / pointer is much, much appreciated!
as currently its really hard for us to find each other once she move away from a wifi hotspot!

If you're not going to use data you don't need to set the APN. That's solely for data and MMS (which relies on data access).

You should be able to just pop the prepaid card in and use it. Make sure you disable data in settings though. (this is assuming there's no phone-specific lock on the prepaid cards- I can't answer that for you)

I have just gone and confirmed this working last night, on my Australian HTC ChaCha (weird name, very cool little phone).

Since there have been a couple of HTC phones released by Softbank, it seems it is possible to use the Softbank Mail. It didnt come up when i searched the market, however once i installed the APK offered here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=984827 it asked me if i wanted to update it and then took me to the appstore application:
    https://play.google.com/store/apps/d...ftbank.mb.mail

(note you might need to have the Softbank SIM in the phone to make it available)

Add a new APN with the following details:
Name: Mail Web Service (This can be anything you want)
    APN: mailwebservice.softbank.ne.jp
    Proxy: sbwapproxy.softbank.ne.jp
    Port: 8080
    Username:softbank
    Password:qceffknarlurqgbl
    Server: <Not set>
MMSC: http://mms/ (< This is "http : // mms /" without the spaces if the forum removes urls)
    MMS Proxy: sbmmsproxy.softbank.ne.jp
    MMS Port:8080
    MCC:440
    MNC:20
    Authentication: PAP
    APN type: default,mms

That should be enough to get you going with prepaid, and MMS/mail

If you do not want to use the Softbank mail app, use the APN above, and the instructions that are stickied at the top of this forum to get it working with GO SMS

    yep

Sorry for not updating guys - been crazy busy lately.

Exactly as tokyo_dom mentioned, this setup works great for us - My gf got exactly this setting working.

So no data, but able to mms / email. also the prepaid also included free text to fellow sbm numbers. we haven't even boot up the white prepaid phone!

why bother with SMS, when you have the SB mail app? That gives you unlimited emails (MMS) to all carriers in Japan, and any email address for that matter. Set up your mobile uploads email address with FB and you can upload pics/statuses by email, and if you set FB to email you each time you get comments/tags you can respond to those emails to add your responses to FB
