THANKS GREAT INFO! on the flip side, when the iphone comes out, VM is offering a $5 discount for "autopay" on the $35 plan making it just $30 - so that might be the way to go depending on how expensive that iphone is!!!

Changing your telephone number will not cause you to lose your grandfathered Beyond Talk plan rate.

There are certain triggering events which would cause you to lose your grandfathered plan rate. Those trigger events are:

    1. Upgrading to a smartphone introduced after May 01, 2012 and activated after May 27, 2012
    2. Choosing to change to another plan (going from the 300 minute plan to the 1200 minute plan, for example)
    3. Allowing your account to expire (which means that you do not top up for more than 120 consecutive days)

VM uses the zip code you entered into your online account Contact Information page to determine the correct area code to assign when you activate a new phone or change the telephone number on an existing phone. Be sure to update your address before initiating the number change. Changing your telephone number costs $10 per change - be sure your account has at least $10 available balance before you begin.

Note that this autopay discount is ONLY for iPhone customers, per VM's Facebook reps.

i bought an optimus elite while being grandfathered in the $25 plan. my phone is acting up and 50% of the time people cannot hear me, so the mic isnt working properly. also, when i am on a call the proximity sensor acts up and will not turn on the display after removing from my ear. if i exchange it for another one, will i still be on the 25/mo rate? i am not 'upgrading'...
i have sent this to VM so i will post their reply

they replied back with "If you make a phone swap with another phone of the same model, you will
keep with the same $25 plan."

however, upon trying a swap to the new elite today, i am forced to go to 35 plan. calls to CS and tech were to no avail.
using twitter they are more able to understand and are consulting with engineering

    25 plan acceptable phones

    • Blackberry Curve 8530
    • HTC Wildfire S
    • LG Optimus Slider
    • LG Optimus V
    • Motorola Triumph
    • Virgin Mobile Venture

What about the Samsung Intercept? It is no longer sold on the Virgin mobile site but if you got one from ebay or something, it should work too shouldn't it?

    Thanks for that list, Virgo.

If you ("you" meaning all who are reading this post) had to pick your next phone from that list, which would you pick? I love that I have a keyboard on my slider, but hate that there is no mhl or tv-out capabilities - would love for my next phone to connect to a TV.

I think the Motorola Triumph since it has the most internal memory. I even rooted a LG Optimus V and still disappointed by how quickly the internal memory is getting used up - I move every app to SD card even.
