I am geting ready to move and I am going to want to change my number but I dont want to lose my $25 plan. Will changing my phone number cause it to go up? Thanks!

I'm not sure if it does cause you to lose your number or not....but if you find out that it does, you can just get a Google Voice number in your new area and use that. Setup your VM number as a forwarding phone and use GV Callback to make your outgoing calls via Google Voice.

The only thing you will miss with your new number is MMS. You'd still have to get those sent to your VM number.

Educated guess here... If you port out the old number, grandfathering goes away. If you change from 1 VM number to another, it doesn't. You shold confirm this with customer support in writing.

Why would you ever have to change your number? People where you are moving to are too lazy to dial an area code? I have lived in 4 different states with the same number and no problems.

Because not everyone has long distance on their landline. Yes, some people still have those things called a landline. If you live in an apartment, you need a local number if you want to be hooked into the intercom. Just because you don't need to change your number, doesn't mean no one else does.

I want to sell my phone with the $25 plan attached. I would expect a new owner to want a new phone number.

Here is another scenario: I used the phone number on a company business card. I no longer work for the company. I want to change it so as to not receive calls from former employer's customers.

Why would you even ask the question? Too lazy to think of valid reasons for a valid question?

The $25 plan is not attached to your phone, it is attached to you account. Your account number is your phone number. Selling a phone does not entitle the buyer to the grandfathered account price. Selling your account, your phone number, does. A new phone number means a new account and the current pricing plan. If the 12 people that call from only a land line don't have long distance they need to leave the 80's and join us in 2012. For those 12 people get a free Google number.

so if the plan is not attached to the phone as you say, and technically attached to an account (or PHONE NUMBER) , switching phones shouldn't lose the grandfathering capabilities?
i never received any info from VM abouy my account changing if i switch phones - i was going to let my plan go, but since they just announced the iphone, i may keep it running just for that!

Don't muddy the water here. Grandfathering is a separate account characteristic that is affected by switching phones. If you switch to one of the new 4G Android handsets, you lose your grandfathered plan, even if you keep the same number. There are plenty of other threads where that is discussed.

    No.

Changing your telephone number will not cause you to lose your grandfathered Beyond Talk plan rate.

There are certain triggering events which would cause you to lose your grandfathered plan rate. Those trigger events are:

    1. Upgrading to a smartphone introduced after May 01, 2012 and activated after May 27, 2012
    2. Choosing to change to another plan (going from the 300 minute plan to the 1200 minute plan, for example)
    3. Allowing your account to expire (which means that you do not top up for more than 120 consecutive days)

VM uses the zip code you entered into your online account Contact Information page to determine the correct area code to assign when you activate a new phone or change the telephone number on an existing phone. Be sure to update your address before initiating the number change. Changing your telephone number costs $10 per change - be sure your account has at least $10 available balance before you begin.

That is incorrect. You may change your phone number and keep your grandfathered rate plan as explained in another reply above.

Actually, the correct statement about that is that grandfathered plans may be affected by switching phones. As long as you swap your phone with another eligible phone, you can keep your grandfathered plan. The grandfathered plan eligible smartphones are:

    • Blackberry Curve 8530
    • HTC Wildfire S
    • LG Optimus Slider
    • LG Optimus V
    • Motorola Triumph
    • Virgin Mobile Venture

Sorry for busting your chops over one word. I just want to people to understand what's up so they know that it is possible to keep their grandfathered plan if their phone breaks, is stolen or gets lost.

So I have a question along these lines. Say you sell your phone and the grandfathered plan with it and you start a brand new account. Could you theoretically request your original number for the new account? Kind of like porting your number within the same company. There by not losing your original number.
