    LG unveils 5-inch HD LCD

LG has been busy working on a 5-inch screen that puts Apple's Retina Display to shame.

The mobile display boasts full 1080p quality, which means the pixel density (ppi) is 440, compared with the iPhone 4S's ppi of 326.

It's actually even higher than the current leader, the Sony Xperia S, which has a ppi of 342.

While that is impressive enough in terms of clarity, the LG Display uses a particular type of LCD technology known as Advanced High Performance In-Plane Switching, or AH-IPS for short.

IPS panels typically have higher resolutions than their standard LCD counterparts, as well as lower power consumption and wider viewing angles.

HD enthusiasts will be pleased to know a ratio of 16:9 is used.

Sang-Deok Yeo, CTO and Executive Vice President of LG Display, said of the new display: 'As smartphones become increasingly valued for how well they do multimedia and with the rapid growth of LTE enabling faster large file transfers, our new 5" Full HD LCD panel is certain to prove a significant asset to the mobile market.'

'With the world's highest resolution smartphone display, LG Display continues to remain a step ahead in developing the most innovative in display technology products,' he added.

LG has said the display will be released in the second half of this year, and will be on exhibited at the SID 2012 Display Week in Boston.

Although 5-inches is a sizable screen to pocket, there's definitely a niche between full-blown tablets and smartphones - providing you can cope with the embarassment of putting the device to your ear.

This new screen will be amazing. I only wish my Galaxy note had it instead of an AMOLED one. The AMOLED suffer from ugly burn in (although the blacks are darker). The one thing I miss about my iphone 4 is the screen... you can do no wrong. But its laughably small.

I just hope that LG will either slap this new screen on a very high end very spec'd out phone or for god's sake sell the screens to a company that knows how to make a phone.

AH-IPS is the way to go, no doubt about it. The ppi will make reproduction amazing.

    Cheers

I have the LG Motion which is the very fast dual core specced at 1.2 Ghz actually dual 1.5 Ghz.

This phone has a small 3.5 " screen and makes me want to see what else LG can do with a larger, higher res screen and still use a fast CPU like the Motion and a bigger battery.

This type of screen you mentioned
which I assume is similar to the one in LG Optimus G ( ? ) can go really far with the newer LG Designs.

If I upgrade -I'll be looking to LG and Samsung so I want to see these screens used also.
