Ok so virgin mobile will now allow tethering with its htc evo.so will you be able to legally tether with one of the android apps? Till now they didn't allow tethering at all.
They didn't do anything to stop you if you did. They simply configured the last optimus v update to block the store based ones. I heard the new ones arn't blocking, but i wouldn't be surprised if they did. Still it would be a quick root and you would beabe to pop a button on there.
Bought an LG Optimus late last year off Amazon brand new. Tethering works with no rooting required. you just need an app called Quick Settings. It reveals the WiFi enable switch, plus it's also a good way to get at the most commonly used settings without mucking about in the Android Settings menus.

Just as a note, these are under the best circumstances. Virgin Mobile pushed an update recently that does absolutely nothing but removes tethering capabilities, so to get around that you may need to root and install a little custom software. From what I've heard, FoxFi can't hurt, although I've received no reviews of it yet on the V, positive or negative.
If you have the older Optimus V, there's no harm done.
