Newbie: Transfer Number from AT&T Questions

    Hi All,

Just ordered a phone and service from Verizon as the signal here is stronger with them. The phone is in transit via Fedex. Do I need to follow any precautionary protocol? I mean: can I just unpack, charge and turn it on first? Or do I need to call AT&T beforehand? My contract with AT&T has expired. What happens if I keep my AT&T service and phone for another month or two? Do they charge me for the new number activation, e.g. a new fee for whatever they call it? I have two more lines with AT&T on the same account that I will keep.

    I am in PDX area.
    TIA

You do not have to contact At&t for the line you are transferring to Verizon. When you get the Verizon phone, either call Verizon from another phone # or go to a Verizon store to complete the transfer. You can keep your line active w/ At&t on a month to month basis without any penalty, but I wouldn't suggest you wait more than 30 days to activate the Verizon phone. You could activate the Verizon phone w/ a new mobile # and transfer your At&t mobile # to Verizon later without penalty. Good luck, let us know how it works.
If I'm annoyed and you're annoyed, does that make us a paranoid ??

    1. Okeh...
    2. Do you want AT&T to do something? If AT&T is still working, then Verizon has not yet done the port. The phone will arrive unactivated. Unpack, charge and call Verizon. The port request will end the AT&T sub-account. (If you call AT&T you may *lose* the number you want to keep.)
    3. You could do this either way. Get a new number from Verizon and continue to pay AT&T. Port to Verizon and get a new number from AT&T. I'd expect to pay a fee for this.
    4. PDX is Portland, Oregon.

    Thank you very much.
I should have added the following.
I have ordered the Barrage from the VZW website and entered the AT&T account info for the number transfer. The phone should arrive on May 31. I will give it a 24-hour charge first.
I will keep one AT&T line with ancient Motorola L2 and another one with a Nokia 6350. Have had VZW MiFi 2200 for over 2 years now, out of contract and have no desire to upgrade yet, as it seems that the new 4G ones they would give me are still buggy.
Most fitting phone for my needs was Nokia E71 with qwerty, but AT&T was trying to force their data plans on me, so I took it off line. Relearned the craft of primitive keyboard texting, survived.
I travel a lot, and will keep both providers with simple voice phones for now. Have a Galaxy S (GSM) that I use for credit card processing only via VZW MiFi via Wi-Fi - not a very good radio in this one.
    Thank you again..

Verizon doesn't start the transfer process until you tell them that you have received your new phone and are ready to activate it. That way you can keep using AT&T until it arrives. Transferring a number among the big 4 companies is very fast.

Like the other guy said, you must activate within 30 days (or send the phone back.) If you keep it and don't activate, Verizon will bill you for its full retail price.

I am still having a nightmare with them over my at&t port - no matter what I do, my caller id always shows my city and state, not my name...

Did you enable the caller ID feature on My Verizon and put your name in it?

Don't forget that the caller id issue is because your information needs to be entered into a landline database. This is not unusual.

So it's now up to the local landline carriers to update their records. Nothing Verizon can do now.
