im going to send it back.. espically since apple will just relase anther iphone in 4 months or so, and id get prepaid but where i live im limited to basiclly att only because every other provider drops more calls then it receives, tmobile sprint both drop calls 80% of the time 10% of the time u dont get them and the other 10% you get a 3 minute conversation. I dont want nothing to do with verizon because everyone ik who has them their data is so sadly slow that i can load up faster on my basic no contract att phone.
Im just looking for a new phone thats a smart phone that wont cost me a fourtune.. att has no good prepaid smartphones.

If your bottom line is just that you want cheap the 3GS if a fine phone. It does everything that an iPhone 4S does but does not have Siri and isn't as fast. It surfs the web, and all apps work on it with a few exceptions. There's no reason to poopoo the 3GS other than it's three years old. Don't forget that when the new iPhone comes out it will be the same full price as you're now paying for the 4S.

Now will the commenters tell him if he got what he wanted?
1. Can he turn it on and check it out without activating it?
2. It will run the current ios 5, right? Will it run properly or kill the phone?
3. He ordered what he thought he could afford. While all the comments are true, that doesn't make them best for him.
4. There's no reason, except for ios 5 and new apps that might not be compatible, to think it would perform any differently than when it came out and people were pretty satisfied then.
5. Which network speed is it compatible with? What can he do/not do with this?
6. If 4 and 4s were not available, would there be any reason to be dissatisfied with this phone?
7. The 8 gb comment is pertinent. Is that sufficient for you?

i just ordered a new 3gs from att cause it was free, but is it worth keeping ro should i just send it right back to att and just use tmobile exhibit 2 4g, i talked to att and they said i could send the phone back charge free when i get it if id like just aslong as i dont activate it, what shuld i do?
Sorry Chris.. I dont get how you are having trouble with $99 iphone 4 when ou are paying $90 a month.....i mean....those who cant afford a99 phone, i dont see paying 90/mnth plan.
But anywho, if i wrte you and content with 3Gs.....get it cintract free for 375 on Apple.com. Then ge ST for 45/month intsead of 90. you'll make up the $375 in 9 months, and you will EARN $600 for the remainder of the 2 years.
You have to step away from the dangling fruit ATT has put in front of you and see the whole forest.
@ChrisFarms, keep the iPhone 3GS it is still a very good and sensible purchase. I'm with Simple Mobile and as an iOS fan I considered getting a 3GS to quell my desire for an iPhone.
even if it doesn't get iOS 6 it has iOS 5 and will likely run all apps other than games requiring iPhone 4S and iPhone New processing power. I know someone who just this year, got rid of their iPhone 3G!
you will get a LOT of life out of it just by it being on iOS 5 alone(i can't think of a single app that requires more than iOS 4.xx to run) and by the time you come to a dead end the 4S will certainly be the "iPhone 3GS" and likely free.
The 3GS is an OK phone but the retina display on the 4 makes a huge difference. Look at both side by side, if that doesn't matter then the biggest difference is a bit more RAM and a different processor. But to me, the screen on the 4 is worth it.
