At this point lots of AT&T's network is UMTS anyway (though I know from personal experience that there's a lot of GSM stuff not covered by UMTS).

And yeah, I think the implementation/coverage is more important than the technology. Both UMTS and Qualcomm's equivalent seem just fine tech-wise.

I thought you just meant the technology itself not how its implimented. CDMA is more advanced but that doesn't mean GSM can't be better if its implemented better.

Well GSM is still around as a back up, and I think in a lot of places probably the only real coverage, but anymore GSM carriers are officially UTMS, not GSM, and UTMS is CDMA too.

So any further word on whether or not this is really happening?

I really hope I find out before the end of the month, because if they're going to get rid of my plan, I have nothing stopping me from switching to Spring. If they don't, well, I might buy another flip phone and tough it out. But if I buy a phone and THEN they get rid of my plan...

I would suspect that if you haven't gotten a letter from uscc telling you that you're going to be switched, you're safe for now. My understanding (based solely on this thread) is that a very limited number of people on very specific retired plans are being updated - not when they upgrade their phone, but on a certain date (which most likely corresponds with their bill cycle).

Thanks! Just got my newest bill yesterday...and doesn't say anything about my plan going away (even if it is the same one mentioned on here)...so hopefully that means I'm good. I'd be pretty mad if I buy a new phone and then they dump my plan though LOL

I had to change my plan in the middle of May. I was up for a phone upgrade using 4000 belief points and was told that I couldn't use my points to get the subsidised price without changing my plan. I believe I could of purchased the phone at full price and kept my contract but I didn't. I was on the 450min, unlimited txt, 5GB data for 69.99. Im now paying $72.49 for the same except 2GB data. I didn't have to sign a new contract though, so I can drop it at anytime without paying the ETF. I have a friend that had the same contract as me but he was paying 79.99 (he got his plan 2 months after I did) and he didn't have to switch. The uscellular employee told me it was just the people that were on the 69.99 pricing for that plan. IF I would of kept the 5GB, my price would be 97.46! So was I forced off? All depends on how you look at it.

I'm on the same (original) belief plan, 450+unl+5gb for 69.99. My contract runs out in August, then I'll be contract-free. Unfortunately, I had no idea the Galaxy SIII would be coming to US Cellular, so I got the S2 in early March. At the time, the rep told me I would be eligible to upgrade using my points in January 2013, but that may not be the case anymore if they indeed increased the months required to upgrade. I'm toying with the idea of buying the S3 outright, but will wait until my contract is done.

What did you end up getting, the S2?

Whoa. That plan is what is keeping me on US Cellular. If they pull that shizz with me I will gladly go on the new plan, then sell my new phone the very next day and go to another carrier.

Nobody said anything to me when I upgraded to the S3 about having to switch plans.

Yes I have the S2 and compared to the Desire I had, I love it.
Did you preorder the S3 hawkeye? Mabey that's a loop hole. I never tried to upgrade online. The lady was nice at the store as she tried for 30 mins to try to keep me on the same plan. She couldn't find a work around on the computer to let her do it or on the phone with uscellular.

If you need the 5GB, wich I didn't, it would be cost effective to buy the phone. $28.00 per month more X 20 months is $560.00 more on the new 5GB plan. Don't know what the phone retails for, but that can't be far off. I did the same thing as you getting the S2 in May. I would of waited for sure. Who would of guessed uscellular would get a flagship phone the same time as the national carriers lol.

    Yes. I preordered online.

I will be really disappointed if they try to make me change plans to take advantage of Belief Plan features.

Huh...so in the "Belief" plan cases, sounds like it's a data issue. Earlier people though were talking about older/better plans they had.

What's funny is I thought the $70 "belief" plan was a pretty terrible deal lol.

After discounts for work and auto pay tied to checking I pay a total of $59.19/month.

Considering the fact that they have the best coverage in my area (Verizon is very close), IMO it is a great deal.

450 minutes is plenty for me with free incoming, nights and weekends, m2m.

Unlimited minutes, unlimited text, 2gb data on Verizon would be ~$25 more. I don't need the minutes.

Yeah, USCC's coverage is the absolute best, which is what's kept me with them. I wish they had a discount for my work, but bizarrely they're the only company (save for the pre-paid ones) that doesn't offer an educational discount.
