After Upgrading, WI-Fi Hotspot Does Not Work

After upgrading from a htc desire to a galaxy s1 (4g) the wi-fi hot spot does not work on the new phone. The feature still works on the other 2 htc desires on my 1500 min plan that I've had for the past 2 years. I wasn't told of ANY changes to my 1500 min plan, which inculdes 5GB/data per phone/month. I also stated that I didn't want anything changed on my current plan. Was told over the phone yesterday that I would have to pay an additional $45/month to get that feature on the new phone (tethering). I'm upset, because I'm already paying for 5GB of data for each of the 3 lines/phones on my account. Anybody else run into this problem?

USCC Just like other providers has always required you to pay for the wifi hot spot. I know on their original Androids it worked despite the fact that you had to pay for it. Unlike other providers they didn't have software blocking the hotspot from working, but by using the hot spot you were violating your TOS. That said I know a friend who has the Aviator told me after talking with CS that the aviator has a built in software package that blocks usage on the wifi hotspot without a package. I wasn't aware of the re release of the mez having that block but they probably wont help you troubleshoot it because its not something they supported for you originally unless you had the package.

I'm sure you could eventually root it to gain that access. Or use a VPN tunnel to your PC.

I don't consider using the phone I paid for on the network I pay for morally questionable.

Except that the company you pay your service for charges extra for a part of the service your using and your not paying for it. Your using a service and not paying for it. You can rationalize it however you want but the fact is the company that's providing your service says you need to pay extra for this service and you say no and do it anyway... not arguing this any further though.

I don't consider using the phone I paid for on the network I pay for morally questionable.

I consider a carrier blocking functionality that both the device manufacturer and the operating system developer intended to be a feature of the device and charging extra for it just because they can to be morally questionable.

Funny, I said something like that to the person from USCC that contacted me after I filled out their comment page. 'Raising the cost of my 5GB plan, and then saying you get a feature that's part of the phone, that few people use, for 'free' is ridiculous. 5GB to a laptop is the same as 5GB to a cell phone as far as the network goes. We're paying for X amount of data per month. '

I suggested if they wanted to compete with the big guys, throw tethering in as an undocumented perk and give 5GB/mo for what the other guys are charging for 2. If I wanted 2GB for 30 bucks, I could get that from a national carrier.

Try using foxfi from the google marketplace it is a free app. I have the prepaid ul talk/text with 2 gig of data for 50 and it is a hotspot without the app, however it does work with the app as well

Device manufacturers and O/S developers build in functionality with NO intentions as to how a provider will use them. Look for a third-party app or pay the freight. It has nothing to do with morality.

I too have issues with this. I don't tether often, or even very much for that matter. I have a tablet that I occasionally use while out on the boat to check the weather or maybe a e-mail or two. Usually it's only because the screen and keyboard are larger and easier to type on for an e-mail. The problem is, I don't use it enough to justify the cost of it, but without it I as the customer have to deal with frustration of typing a long e-mail on my phone just because the provider feels they need to make me suffer if I don't pay. I pay for data for a reason, why charge me for data AND tethering when the data is already paid for and the tethering in a portion of the device I paid for. I don't really care morally either way as that can be argued, but how would you feel if you bought new tires for your car and they charged you for the air that was in them ?

I used to be a customer of USCC because of things they didn't block or disable,,, little perks of a good customer service type of company. They are taking away the perks of being their customer and making it less of an advantage. More of those things they are changing I mentioned in my "frustrated" thread. I am giving them over $200 a month for my phones,,,,,, is that not enough to allow me to tether maybe 5-10mb a month?

In fact, I have sent them customers over the years because of these things they don't block and disable,,,,, but now I can't do that, and I hesitate before referring anyone. I want to be appreciated as a customer,,,,, but that is a dying commodity in this world these days.

Lol, That's true, but you are really paying for the pump and electricity,,,,, which we already hold in our hands.

I probably haven't used over 100MB in the past year via tethering a laptop.

Well I hate to break it to you, every carrier has blocked this feature for a long time. USCC just started for one reason or another but you were technically violating their terms of service when you were using it before anyway.
