Any reviews for the new HTC EVO V yet?

Seems some people got there hands on one early. Anyone have good or bad things to say? Read some negative things about the Sprint EVO 3D having bad reception, poor call quality, etc.

Not For Everyone - Going Back To Motorola TRIUMPH.

I bought this phone from Radio Shack a few days ago. The screen was crooked near the lower right corner (extra space if you look closely). I exchanged it for another one; on the 2nd phone, the screen seemed more center, but I found another defect... a bright white speck of light coming through the black area around the capacitive buttons. Needless to say, I've been very unhappy with the overall quality, especially considering it's $300. Not only that, but I found that there are numerous incompatibilities with Android 4.0. Font text can be off in some apps, on other apps certain features just don't work, or are not even showing as available when they should be.

4G is a GIMMICK. 3D is also a GIMMICK. To get 4G you pretty much have to be outside, and go through the process of searching for signal... hope you can get one, even in areas that show 4G as available. Not only that, 4G also drains the battery more. The 3D feature makes my eyes go absolutely bonkers... it's almost like looking through an old-fashioned 3D book of some sort with many horizontal lines.

While the screen is bigger (4.3" vs. Triumph's 4.1"), it is only longer, and actually LESS wide, giving the illusion of almost a smaller screen. The enhanced resolution is nice, but makes the screen harder to read (everything appears smaller). Voice quality on calls is good. The speakerphone isn't loud, neither are any of the ring tones, or otherwise. In short, the speakerphone sucks! The phone is also thicker and more bulky... and you're going to want a case to protect it... even adding more thickness and weight.

I returned the 2nd unit today for a REFUND. On the plus side, YES, the phone IS much quicker... attributed to the Dual Core 1.2Ghz processor. The Dual Core really makes a difference. But honestly, that's about it.

I'm going back to the my Motorola TRIUMPH!!! Yes, the Triumph has it's glitches, but still I'm satisifed with everything else about it... a perfectly centered screen, thin body, Rocketfish TPU case (smoke color). Clean installation of 2.2 Android. And if you have a Triumph, I recommend the following programs: Extended Controls, Go Launcher EX, Juice Defender.

Good luck with your Triumph. Seriously, I've owned three of them, and they all featured a broken micro USB port. Seriously, if you are passing over the EVO for the Triumph, you must have the magical Triumph with staggering battery life, an amazing antenna, and a micro USB port that will never break. If that Triumph exist, please share video of it, so I can soak in an experience that I've never had.

Case of the triumph, not surprised the stock software sucks.

Wow! The Triumph is a less frustrating experience than the Evo?!?! That has me worried.

I was wondering about the 4G service. I've already heard quite a few less-than-flattering things about WiMax. The 3D display sounds like an even bigger bag of uselessness. I don't really get the point. Luckily, my main reason for buying this phone is to upgrade specs/hardware.

According to FedEx, my Evo should be arriving tommorow. I'll be posting some quick thoughts on it once I've had some time to use it.

I've heard so many different reports about the screen. Some say its 3D, some say its 2d, some say you can turn the screen on and off from 2d to 3d.

If the screen is constantly 3D, I will pass on this phone. Just seems like a headache waiting to happen

I don't think it is on 3D by default. From what I've heard, the screen is just fine in 2D mode...and you can only use 3D to view the pictures or video you've taken. The 3D thing is basically a novelty. I doubt many folks will find a real use for it on a daily basis.

The biggest issue sounds like it could be WiMax coverage. If you can only get it outdoors while remaining perfectly still, I can see quite a few ex-$25 Grandfathers kicking themselves for having bought this phone. This 4G option is supposed to be an upgrade from Sprint's sluggish 3G network. It's not really an upgrade if you can't lock onto a signal in your car or at your workspace cubicle.

Ok, I hope that's the case. I was under the impression that even the launcher is 3D.

I'm not too worried about the WiMax, because I'm in Boston, and apparently WiMax has incredible coverage in Boston. Even if not, this phone mayyy be worth the extra $10 a month even without the 4G(I'll definitely wait for a few more reviews before I make that conclusion)

No, the default is standard viewing, not 3D.

I just got mine from Radio Shack around noon. There was a hang-up on the activation process, but I eventually got it squared away. It is charging right now in preparation of a full "field test" later this afternoon. For now, I have just a few quick observations.

First and foremost, the screen is very nice. As has been mentioned, the 3D display is not enabled by default. Everything shows up crisp and clear. It is definitely sharper than the Triumph's display and the touch response is noticeably better as well. The dual-core processor makes all animations and transitions smooth as silk.

I took a still picture using the 3D camera. It definitely gives the perception of depth and can almost make you dizzy when viewed at close range. I'm not blown away by this feature, but it is certainly unique. Bottomline on the 3D imaging: You can definitely tell it works, but I'm not sure how practical this feature will be for everyday users.

One other note, the speaker volume seems to be lower (at max) than the Triumph was. The quality is okay, but is noticeably softer.

It's just about done charging, so I'll be trying out the 4G and GPS features this afternoon.

    Update, Part II

Battery life: It's hard to tell since this is the first full cycle, but I have to guess it's going to be fairly comparable to the Triumph. After 90 minutes of sporadic (but not continual use) the battery is down to 85%. You'll probably have to charge it by day's end...depending on how much 4G you decide use, of course.

4G Coverage: I live in a Clearwire protection area. There is 4G service here, but my attempts to access the "fringe areas" where Clear has technically shaded green have been unsuccessful so far. Basically, it seems if your area is not surrounded by green on all sides on the Clearwire coverage maps, you'll probably not get reliable (or any) service there. I'm going to try some different locations for further 4G testing this evening.

Screen: This is without a doubt the best display VM has ever had on a phone. I was watching some of my old HD videos shot with the Triumph on the Evo's screen. They look amazingly sharp...and I thought they looked good on the Triumph when I first shot them. The Misses has an iPhone 4S, and I'd be willing to put this screen in a league with Apple's Retina Display.

Sound: Compared to the Triumph's speaker, you'll have to listen a little harder. I cranked the Evo up all the way and still it seemed faint. The quality (when plugged into speakers) is just fine, but you might have to do a Spinal Tap and crank things to 11.

Look and Feel: Some have complained that the phone is heavier and bulkier than the Triumph. While this is technically true, I didn't notice a massive difference while carrying it in my pocket. The size/weight differential is negligible, IMO. Considering all the other pluses this phone has over the Triumph, I don't mind a little extra gravitational pull.

Initial Impression: This is worth the money; certainly moreso than the Triumph was last year. HTC's Evo V 4G is proof that pre-paid service no longer means taking a backseat in the "Tech-n-Specs" department.

How is the multi-touch and accuracy of the touches?

This drove me CRAZY on the MT, also, does it have that bug where a touch input gets stuck causing everything to freak out?

Thanks for the info so far though!
