SG3 vs HTC ONE, Google Nexus -- final decision many times...

I am in the market for replacement of my present phone which is Motolola Milestone (A853?) on Telus Prepaid.

Goals for replacement phone are not to lose features on present phone, especially wrt screen resolution & battery life. Giving up physical keyboard was accepted given that touch screen typing has much improved.

Canadian 20June release date for SG3 is good because this phone has been front runner for replacement at times and at other times uncertain. There is a lot of confusion due to the approximate 5 SG3 models, and the features available in some models and not clear if available on others.

The short list of phones considered were the iphone 4S, Samsung Galaxy S III, HTC ONE S/X, and Google Nexus. My process for selection/elimination folllows...

Battery life and/or field replacement of battery eliminate all but the SG3. There are work arounds such as external battery packs but this is less desirable. Nugen *might* come out with extending pack for HTC ONE...
SG3 cover appears for occassional removal, unlike the Milestone metal battery cover which I remove almost daily.

Voice commanding/response is a bit of a joke with most phones not being able to initiate commanding with a hardware button. (First use touch screen...) SG3 attempts to remody this based on reviews but the voice commands (Not talking Google voice part of ICS) appears missing from the Telus i747 user manual as example. Iphone 4S is the winner for voice commands with response.

FM Radio. Europian reviews refer to FM radio within the HTC ONE X and SG3. Canadian user manuals have no reference to FM radio so assume this feature disappeared in conjunction of the dual for quad processor swap. I was looking forward to having all my portable entertainment within one device. Online streaming not viable option on present data plan.

Google Nexus. Lacks severly in battery life but offers a tempting price/performance tradeoff.

Iphone 4S. Strongest argument for this phone is that everyone is happy with it. LOL. I personally find the pixel density too fine, plus the acceptance of no SD card, no Flash, retraining with iOS. Camera has decent pictures.

HTC ONE. There is no clear advantage for the ONE X. Initially thought the brighter camera lense would be an advantage but that is lost when picture quality from SG3/Iphone is reportedly better.

Build quality. This opens a pandora box. I get the general impression that HTC/Samsung/iphone are about equal and surpassed by Motorola. My Milestone has been flawless until recent digitizer failure prone to these models. I am attempting repair next week when parts are in. Maybe this will extend my replacement process....

    Grrr...

I'm kind of biased but the Galaxy S3 is going to be my next phone. The 720p screen (so what if it's pentile, it's still great), support for 64GB microSD cards and the fact that you can replace the battery if need be.
It's also much easier to hold in the hand than the One X.

All three are great phones though.

What about the galaxy nexus - best bang for buck especial lily if retail.

I don't see build quality in a phone to have known hardware issues with a particular model.

Is LTE an asset? It should be if you do much Web browsing on the mobile network (as opposed to WiFi). The Galaxy Nexus lacks LTE.

    More opinions....

Google Nexus is a clear winner in terms of price vs performance. IMHO this is diminished after factoring cost for mandatory extended battery pack or alternatives.

LTE? I have debated merits of buying international version w/o LTE now, against the cheaper SG3 i747 AT&T/TELUS LTE model, and the less likely T999 TMOBILE (1700 AWS) model. All of which should work at the 3G speeds I am presently used to. LTE speeds far exceed what I am used to at home. :-)
Present bias is towards the overall lowest 3 year cost. The T999 model is most attractive since it gives me the greatest number of options for flipping between carriers in Canada. The likely outcome may be the i747 model whose outright purchase is presently about $150 lower then the international i9300 model.

64GB SD Card? Is this an outcome from the Snapdraggon S4 chipset? The GT-I9300 manual clearly states a maximum size of 32GB.

As far as I know, SG3 is the only phone where voice commands can be initiated by the tacticle press of a physical key on the phone (double tap home key in SG3 case). Purpose of hands free voice commands is defeated if one must look at touch screen to press a microphone icon.

The Samsung website and those at XDA are using 64GB cards. Even at the premiere, it was mentioned that 64GB cards could be used.

Both the Exynos versions and S4 versions should allow it.

With LTE, the most important change is not the raw transfer speed, but the latency. That's why Web browsing on complex pages is much better there. Other interactive activities such as VOIP or Google Maps are probably similarly affected. I haven't yet tried it, but all reports that I have seen here on HoFo are that it makes a dramatic difference. I'm not happy with the HSPA performance on the Rogers network here in Ottawa.

Now that I have a Galaxy S3 (quad core Exynos), I will say this phone knocks it completely off the ballpark.

    Drillbit.
What are you comparing against? The X-One or SG3 north american variants?

The international S3 has certainly raised favour in recent reviews vs its NA equivalents.
However, price/performance still has me fence sitting. $750 international vs $550 NA SG3.

If I can wait (LOL), I expect this price difference to dissapear over the summer.

For me, SGS3 is a no brainer here. Just expandable MicroSD and removeable battery alone are enough to convince me. Not to mention the spec of this phone is top notch. There's no doubt being the king of android within this year.

The only problem I have is it's hard to choose between international and NA versions. I don't game on my phone, but rather do a lot of web browsing. Performance wise, S4 is probably on par with Exynos, but just falling behind on Graphic department. I am bit worried about the battery life here since LTE is still relatively immature. Having a consistent battery drainer doesn't sound very good to me.

I would like to see a review on comparing these 2 versions!!!!

P.S iPhone 4S' Siri is also required to do a tap-and-hold action in order to initiate the function. So, it's not technically hand-free, either. Actually Siri and S-voice is very very similar in term of function, the only difference I see from many reviews is S-voice provides more way to interact with your phone. Meantime, Siri processes information much more quicker and accurate.

For that price, that is likely an unlocked international version. The firmware and the update comes directly from Samsung with no need of carrier approval.

The phone is just plain phenomenal. There is no need for comparison. The HTC One X both international and US, are deadly fast too. Sheer speed between the One X and the SGS3 is not the question of deciding between the two, but how much these phones react to your emotional needs. In other words, the deciding factor is taste especially since the new Touchwiz and HTC Sense are different "artistically". I see benchmarks that will win it for the One X, others for the SGS3. Then there are benchmarks that will win it for the quad core Exynos, some for the quad core Tegra 3, and others for the Qualcomm S4.

In the US, both One X and the SGS3 gets the Qualcomm S4. This will boil down how much like you the packaging, software, and other things like Micro SD, battery size and removability, body build, etc,.
