Does porting a number in still require new sim card?

I remember the days during launch that for existing accounts, if people wanted to port a number to an existing account they would have to purchase a new sim card.

Does this still hold for present day?

I'm planning to activate a KW number to pay your way, then port in a existing GTA (rogers prepaid #) number next month on that account.

But if I would have to get a new sim card anyways, then I'll just hold off that for now.

    Thoughts?

It depends how good you are at negotiating customer service. Officially yes. Unofficially many, including me, managed to get the fee waved. I did threaten to cancel and it was retentions that waved it, front line sales and support probably cannot.
