It's been happening to me for a few months now. My amaze will say at&t 4g and my friends mytouch 4g slide will say at&t 2g so its 850mhz hspa. (Sadly it's throttled at around 60 kbps. Ugh.... Why)

Hey guys, I have an iPhone 4S which was factory unlocked for any GSM carriers and one day i looked at my phone and it said AT&T 3G !! However there were still Tmobile towers where i was which i found odd, also there were no bars it only said AT&T 3G! will it roam on AT&T's 3G when i go upstate where only AT&T towers are? Also this happened to me twice already and when i tried going on the internet it said "You are not subscribed to a cellular internet plan" or something in that nature.

Maybe that area is part of the roaming deal after the break up

In my experience in the east coast, its always in areas where i've roamed on at&t 2g before. The new HSPA roaming i've used was on at&t in west virginia and parts of ohio where t-mobile doesn't exist. (through the mountains).
I have noticed that t-mobile just about always avoids two areas.
1. Mountains
2. Rest stops on the interstate. (I can't tell you how many times i get 1 bar or no service at a rest stop. With a tower filled with cell antennas) UGH!
T-Mobile has always roamed here (NW CA, former Edge Wireless) in-market onto AT&T in dead spots, and that holds for all the other former Edge Wireless markets. On the flip side, late last year AT&T started roaming in-market onto T-Mobile here too in dead spots.

Well, congestion definitely isn't an issue here in our rural area. AT&T is on 1900 only though here, Verizon and U.S. Cellular own the 850 licenses.
Edit-T-Mobile is still 2G here along with Metro PCS, while Verizon and U.S Cellular have EVDO and AT&T has HSPA+ w/EB. Verizon is supposed to be rolling out LTE up here later this year, with USCC to follow in 2013, hopefully AT&T will be soon as well.
When I had tmobile years ago (before the attempted buyout) I roamed sometimes on ATT while in PA. It's nothing new. I don't think it has to do with congestion either but rather a lack of tmobile towers. It was only in rural PA that I roamed. Tmobile has the more populated areas covered better.
