With Apple selling iPhones unlocked and AT&T being more-or-less willing to unlock theirs, Virgin's full-price-yet-still-locked offering seems like a big step backwards. This coming from Sprint, I'm not surprised. They make it as difficult as possible to purchase a phone full price if you're not a customer and even if you do own one of their phones free and clear, they still won't let you use it on anything except postpaid.

^not really. $30 a month for a top tier device is a big step forwards.

Fixed that for you. T-Mobile has had "top tier" devices on their $30/mo plan ever since they've had a $30/mo plan.

And same goes for PagePlus, and a few other MVNO's. You can have a "top tier" device on PagePlus for $3/month.

I had a Droid1 on PagePlus less than 30 days after it was released. Cost me $600 too.

$55/month if you want some data though.
    Home ISP, RR-Ultimate WiFi, $90/mo | Verizon 4G, $30/mo Unlimited

    School, $5,000/semester | Work

And how many minutes does that get you?

    Not 300, I'm sure.

That's officially nuts. I was able to get a brand new gsm 4s for less than 500. No way I'd pay that for a CDMA locked iphone.

There's just not many on eBay. Probably because after eBay and PayPal fees (which end up being about 10% in total), you'd be lucky to turn a profit. The seller pocketed about $674.10, which is not enough to cover buying one in most places with sales tax.

The local rat shacks have tons of 'em in my neck of the woods. I'm not buying them to flip on eBay because as I just stated, it's a money losing proposition.

Your post implies that someone did buy one lol. I doubt anyone is stupid enough to buy one for that price.

You can sell something for any price you want. Whether or not someone buys it is the bigger picture.

Target now has an in-store iPhone display - at least the one I visited last night, that is. I didn't get the chance to ask whether they required in-store activation, but at least it gives people the chance to use the Red Card 5% off to bring down the price a bit.
